Breeding Jungles

PKossak Nov 18, 2003 08:04 PM

This is my first year breeding Jungles, and I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind helping me out a bit. I have read some of the previous posts, and they answered a bunch of my questions, but I still have few. First, how important is a light cycle? I currently have the lights off at around 10 pm, and turn them on at around 7:30 AM. Last week I started turning their hot spots on for around 2-3 hours a day, with a max of about 92-93 degrees (even though my female hasn't been on the hot spot lately for some reason?), and for the rest of the day they stay at room temp - low 80's I think.

At night I believe the room goes down to about 68-72 degrees.
A few days after I started this I placed them together for a night, and didn't witness copulation, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen as I only had my eye on them for about an hour while cleaning other cages.

So, how does this look? Any suggestions? How often should I put them together and for how long? Of course, no feeding should occur at this "cooling" period, correct?

Thank you very much for any help.

Paul

four weeks. I would suggest that the temps be in the lower 70's for at least 10-12 hours (I even keep it lower for a little longer) and then only raise them to the low 80's for the daytime highs. After 4-6 weeks of cycling at these temperatures I usually witness at least instant interest by introducing the animals. I usually introduce the male to the female since my males tend to be on the prowl in their cages looking for females anyway. I just completed my cycling and introduced them last night and I witnessed copulation within an hour. The male was instantly stalking the female and her tail raised up for her sign that she was ready and willing. I saw them hook up and when I came back in the morning they were still tail locked. I will leave them together for a few days then separate them. I will now bring them back to normal temperatures and re-introduce the male to the female in about a week for a few more days of copulations throughout the breeding season until I see obvious signs of a gravid female (lack of interest on both animals, obvious swelling, female basking in the heat source etc..). This has been my formula that many other breeders have passed along to me and it has worked for me for the last three years now. Good luck and hope this helps.
