a few quick questions

rheenie Nov 18, 2003 08:11 PM

okay, first I want to thank everyone who has answered my posts in the past and thanks to those who post here on a regular basis, I am learning soo much, and having lots of fun with my snake.
okay, first question is about feeding, My female corn is between 12 and 18 inches, (no one around here will help me measure and she sure wont cooperate ) and I feed her one fuzzy a week. this seems to work for her but I'm concerned about overfeeding, well and underfeeding. what is a normal weight for a corn that size? Also she is about four months old is this a good size for her to be? I'm a little paranoid she's my first snake and I want her to be healthy
My second question is about heating. I want to switch her from the fish tank she's in to a larger rubbermaid container. What is the best way to keep it warm. In her tank I have a UTH and if it gets really cold I use the overhead red lamp. Which is better to use on plastic.
Thanks for all your help.

tip of the day: dont let the sane people spoil it

My snakes were probably around 30 grams at that length. Also, you'd probably be surprised at how long she really is. I've always found that I underestimate how long my snakes are. When I measure them I usually find out they are like 3-5 inches longer than I thought.

One fuzzy a week sounds okay. If it doesn't look like it leaves much of a lump, you may want to try 2 fuzzies per feeding.

If your using a 10 gallon tank, you can keep her in it for quite a while still. All my 2002s are still in 10 gallon tanks and they are all around 30 inches long and around 175 grams. (Mine should be moved into a larger cage soon though.)

If you do decide to switch her over, stick with a UTH. Frankly, I don't know how you would rig the rubbermaid to be able to use the bulb and even if you did it might melt the plastic.

See the discussion down the list about UHT (UnderTank heaters) vs. Human heating pads. That should help clear it up.

Also, my corns vary in size. I have 2 03's that are around 22" each and eat small hoppers and an 02 that I just got that's only 17" (don't know what happened there)which eats small fuzzies and another 03 that's just this tiny little thing compared to the other 03's and she eats pinkies. So as long as it's eating good and pooping good and everything else is normal, it will grow at it's own speed and not some "HUMAN" guideline.
