Surinam BCC vs Columbian BCI

snaker May 31, 2003 08:02 PM

Over the years I have had a number of Columbian BCIs but recently
have been becoming impressed with the Surinam BCCs I see on this board.
For those of you that have real world experience with these snakes,
what is the real difference between the two in addition to appearance
and price?
Is there a noticable difference in size, temperment and husbandry??
As the only Surinams I have seen in the flesh were neonates at shows
and supposed Surinams at a petshop I wouldn't buy a guppy at, I would
appreciate any info you give me. Thanks

Well lets see.. of what I know of the differances between bci and bcc: BCC get larger in general, a normal colombian bci will reach on average 10-11' max, and a bcc can and will reach 13' regularly. And also bcc are a little more difficult to get to breed. ( I know of a specific female that a local herper has tried to breed the last 6 seasons with no success at all). That is all I can think of at this time...Later Randy T.

BCC are also more temperamental when it comes to feeding young-uns. They tend to regurge if fed too much as babies or if the temps fluctuate now and then. It's not that complicated if you have the time to keep an eye on them. Suris and Guyanans are personally my favorites. My second favorites are the island boas. They're easier to care for and are beautiful naturally occuring diverse(color) morphs. Good luck.

...Surinams are a bit more spirited than columbians but with handling they're fairly equal. Baby surinams go through a short-lived period after birth where they'll get pretty 'pissy' unlike most colombians. Size is pretty equal although I've seen some pretty huge surinams down at the florida importers. SJM

I don't know much about Surinams but from what I've read, they are more tempermental than Columbians and they do get larger. BUT, I've had my Columbian for 10 years now, and I'm here to say that I wouldn't even think about trading her for any other snake. Wether it be a burmese or a $10,000 special morph ball python. Columbian boas are in my opinion the best.
