Boulder's new cage in the works

georgio Nov 18, 2003 08:34 PM

Just thought I'd share a picture. It's 8 feet by 2 feet, made from 3/4" melamine and will have sliding glass doors. Lighting will include a dual 4' fluorescent combined with an incandescent and a mercury vapor bulb for basking lights. I will have to try different wattage bulbs to get the temperatures correct but I think he'll like it. The picture has him inside it (he woke up again today...that's three times in 2 months) to give an idea of how large it is.

Cool!! Or should I say 'Hot!' I hope to post some pics of my new inside age for my three juvies, but will have to wait till this weekend. It gets too dark and they have gone to bed by the time I get home from work! This cage was given to me by a friend who kept a Water Dragon in it. We increased the floor space by putting it on it's side, adding plexiglass front window, and screen top. It is 4 x 3 x 2 foot. They seem very happy!
I was given another Mali this weekend! My sister was at the checkout at a pet store and got talking to a lady who was buying mealworms for her turtles. Long story short... she had a Uro she gave to me!! It is a mature "male" or male-mimic female, huge, fat and tame! What a nice guy!! Unfortunately, the people who originally had him fed him granola and crackers for treats, so I think that explains his weight. He is at 358 grams and 12 plus inches. Next to my yearlings he is big! But he is in his own cage until I am sure he is healthy. Next Spring I hope to build a big outdoor permanent enclosure, where they can live yearround.
Love those pics of Boulder! Hope to add some soon of 'Jake'!

Looks great.
That cage makes him look small-how is that possible!
My uro's are ready to move in to your large digs....they seem jealous.
When do you get the female(pebbles)?
Also did you see the post from Pro-exotics regarding substrates?
I like the natural formed burrows....
Also, did you weigh Boulder just prior to his brumation?
If so how much weight did he lose?
Congrats on the new girl....

Ed,

Saw the post about the diggable substrate. I think what I'm going to try in this new cage is a combination shelf liner and "dirt tub." I'm going to get a rubbermaid bin, fill it with a clay-sand mixture, let it dry and then cut a whole in the side as the front of the burrow. Then I'll dig a little bit out to start the burrow and let Boulder do the rest. We'll see how it works out...

I am almost done with the cage. I'm still testing temperatures but I think I may do a 160 watt powersun in the winter and switch to a 100 watt in the summer. Right now I have a 100 watt household light in there to see how the cage retains heat. Here's an updated picture. Sorry it's all scrappy I had to take many pictures and piece them together to get it all in one shot. I'll post some pictures of Pebbles as soon as I get her next week!

Looks good.
Man, it sure is a big cage when you have to piece together the shots to create it.
Your substrate sounds interesting. Let me know how it goes.
Did you purchase the glass and track for the cage yet?
i had a hard time finding sliding door track in this area-found it at rockler.com....if you need it...
Good luck.

Ed,

It's hard to tell but the glass and tracks are already on the cage. You can see the small pulls on each side. I bought the tracks from the same place I bought the glass and it was $23 for 12 feet of track. So far it has worked out great. I slightly busted the melamine in the back with a screw but it's not a big deal, it's just chipped a little. I just need to screw in the supports and it will be done.
