Hatchling gone dark? Question for experienced breeders/keepers please

kofseattle Nov 18, 2003 08:45 PM

Hello,
Have not been in this forum for a long time. I bred a couple of my leos this year and got a nice pair of babys in the first clutch. However, one is turning dark. It was looking very "tang" when born but unlike it's clutchmate it is getting really dark. It's eating habits have dropped a bit but nothing of concern really. Has anyone seen this? Any known causes? The other hatchlng is very bright. This is unusual so I thought I would ask around a bit. The setup is perfect and thermostat regulated. They are eating mealies and crix supplimented with Rep-Cal. ANy assistance appreciated.

The main known cause is the absolute, predicable variability of the leopard gecko. Although you can somewhat predict what a baby might look like based on the parents, you will not be able to know for sure what EITHER of your two hatchlings will look like until they are much older, like 9 months old or even older.

Enjoy them and the changes they will go through.

Hi Steven,

So there are still some of the old gang hanging out here!

This seems to be more than a color change. It isn't that the orange got duller but instead the entire gecko got dark. She almost looks unhealty. If she wasn't eating as well as she is I would worry but she eats fine, but not as good as she use to. From the time she was hatched and about a month into it, she was vibrant and very colorful. Then one day (overnight) I thought she was getting ready to shed but it wasn't that. She was just noteably darker. Her entire body became darker like she was turning black or something. The colors never came back and she remains this way today, three weeks later. From what I have seen in the past color changes come over time not over night in most cases. Especially one this drastic. I am just worried it may be the sign of sickness and thought I would ask around. I will post a pic at some point so it is a little more clear what I am talking about.

Thanks for your input Steven!
