OT - Thanks to everyone who uses captal letters and periods.

LeoBeginner Nov 19, 2003 06:20 AM

I was just reading through a few posts and ran into a couple that hurt to read. Thanks to everyone who writes using capitalization and punctuation. For those who don't: please throw a period into your posts somewhere. It goes after a complete thought, and before the next one starts.

Whenever I come across one that's all in lower case and doesn't seem to have any punctuation or sentence endings, I just skip it. I don't know if this aggrevates anyone else in this forum, but there hasn't been a debate lately, so I figured now would be a good time to mention it. I know it's 'cool' to write like that, but geez...

Oh, and I'm only 22, so it's not like I'm the grumpy old English teacher coming down on the kiddies or anything. I just like to be able to read a post without having to decipher it first.

well, i use all the punctuation my sentences need in order for them to make sense. although i don't cap many of my letters, i still use punctuation and my posts are still understandable. why would this still bother you? it still makes sense to me and whether or not people type differently compared to either one of us doesn't matter to me. if they need help, i try - if i need help, i'm glad to receive it.

...it drives me nuts when people write one big sentence for a post.

Your posts don't bother me. It's more the people who write like this:

u r so kewl thats awesome u 8 ll that pza blah blah blah blah

It's hard to want to help when you can't understand what's being said... Just a personal gripe. Most people on this forum don't do that, but a few write unreadable things. Those unreadable ones hurt my head.

Ugh...it drives me nuts when people type like: OMG ur so kewls lylas omg omg omg omg...like u ppl r neet.

That's how my sister writes on everything...AOL, message boards, you name it, and I can barely stand to look at it. Maybe I'm just anal, but it's sort of an unconscious thing for me..when I see people with bad puncutation (I suppose I use '...' quite a bit, but I think that's better than trying to figure out where I need to put semi-colons), spelling, captialization, or simply the inability to form sentences, I start to think that they are not very intelligent. It's most likely not true, but I have a hard time taking what they say seriously.

LeoBeginner Nov 19, 2003 06:17 PM

That's exactly how I feel. I use '...' a lot as well, but it's not like it's hard to look at.

I know what you mean about equating intelligence to writing. It's just hard to take someone seriously when they write like that. I'm just as anal about it.

I agree. I'm ashamed at the general writing, spelling & grammar skills of the average American. Certainly, you can argue that it's just a forum post & doesn't matter It's not like it's your SAT or GRE writing section, but it does matter. Proper use of the language shows not only that you are capable & NOT unintelligent, but also that you care about yourself, how you're perceived & about your reader. It's a matter of respect for yourself & others.
If you still don't care about your grammar, at least re-read your post before pressing "Post Message" because, as LeoBeginner said, if you want help, you should at least make the message legible so we don't have to spend time trying to figure out what you're asking.
