Hoping to start breeding- color suggestions?

DrZot Nov 19, 2003 08:35 AM

I've been working with corn and garter snakes for years, but have not tried breeding lizards before. I have 3 big beautiful leo gecko girls (all normal coloration, though I personally think their patterns are lovely ;> ) and I would like to try getting them a nice male and giving breeding a shot. My question revolves around the dizzying number of colors and morphs out there- I don't want to get into albinos right off the bat since I'd like to be able to sell some of the offspring and I'd like to try for something interesting/pretty right off. Are any of the high-orange (or other) colors NOT recessive? I'd like to find a nice male with color or pattern that will produce good looking kids first generation- doesn't need to be anything super fancy, if I get into this I can expand later into recessives and all. I'd just like something a little more interesting than the standard PetCo geckos

I'd also appreciate pointers toward good info web sites on this- I'm sure you guys have some favorites you could suggest! I'm not in a big hurry (though my girls may be!)and plan to thoroughly check out the "breeding manuals" before proceeding.

The true Hypo/Super Hypo Carrot Tails are dominant, so theoretically you'd hatch some out the first generation. I've not done this crossing very normal(heavily spotted) leopard geckos, but if it's dominant, it should work. The problem you'd probably have is getting much nice coloration, because the mothers would affect coloration of the offspring.

You could get a double homozygous male, such as Patternless Albino or Blazing Blizzard(good luck finding one to buy), and then all of your offspring would be double hets.

If you only want to get one more gecko, buy the very best male you can afford, Super Orange Super Hypo Baldy Carrot Tail(Check out albeysreptiles.com, hisss.net, among others). Don't discount albinos just yet, there are probably going to be some amazing Bells produced next year by Kelli (hisss.net), and the Trempers produced by A&M are tremendous to say the least. Taino Reptiles (www.tainoreptiles.com) has some Hybinos from Ray Hine that are probably the most beautiful albinos I've ever seen(only in a picture, though).
