weening from live prey---am i doing it right?

velcro Nov 19, 2003 09:51 AM

Well, I started weening our 7month old beardie from live prey as a staple to only getting them as treats. He is offered fresh fruit and veggies 2 times daily, fresh water, and kaytee pellets. He seems to be pooping regularly (usually on the side of his bowls), and he seems to be still very active. We started this on Sunday and now it is Wedns. I think he will do ok now on the non-live stuff, but how do I introduce the live stuff back in as treats and make sure he doesn't think he is going to get it regularly. We still have a supply of crix and supers.

HELP!!!

week 1-Offer pellets only throughout the day to see if my Beardies would go after them, boy did they. crix 2x a day

week 2-offered salad with pellet topping throughout the day. Crix pm only

week 3-cut back on crix and monitor weight of Beardies

week 4-offer crix and other treats as you want, monitor weight.

As they get older they will eat fewer crix on their own.
