Has anyone ever kept them in captivity? How do they do?

We kept several Plethodontid salamanders when I worked in the herpetology dept. at UMASS. We kept them in plastic shoe boxes with wet paper towels. We put extra paper towel in the boxes to give them plenty of nooks and crannies. It was easy to keep moist and easy to keep clean. They are small animals and need small prey. Luckily there was a genetics lab downstairs and they gave us all the fruit flies we wanted. Most of the northern salamanders also do better when kept cool. We got a big cooler from a liquor store that was closing. You know the big sliding glass doored things you get beer out of? We kept it at about 55F. (Let's see you cheating southerners keep animals cool now! [lol]).

Plethodontids are easy to care for an extremely interesting if you can solve the food problem. They may be OK at room temps (65 or so F).

Good Luck,

Brian

Ok great, we are setting up a new jersey natural ecosystem tank with different herps found in the pine barrens. So I'm just wondering about their captive wellbeing and such. In the tank they will have plenty of flies and worms from the live plants and logs and mosses we put in there. Thanks again.

Set the tank up like a seepage, give them a water area but provide land also and hiding places, the water should not be too high maybe 5 inches at most, mine spend lots of time on land, but do go in the water,i feed them small mealworms,I put live blackworms on the land and they snatch it up.

its going to be a false bottom with reservoir underneath and a small pool in the middle. Water will be filltered back up.
