A sad day.....

bmendyk Nov 19, 2003 11:30 AM

I just found one of my black tree females dead in her enclosure. There were no sins or symptoms of her being sick, she was active, alert, and feeding up until her death. She is one of my females that was breeding with my male, and to make it more of a kick in the face, when I cut her open, to see if there were any noticeable things wrong with her internally, I found three pearly white eggs developing inside of her.... My black trees are one of my favorites, mine have great personalities, and are fun to watch, so this is a sad day for me..

here are some pics..

Bob

ewwww yuckyuckyuck ewwwwwwwwwww ewwwwww ewwww!!!!!
Yes, I have a weak stomach, and could never imagine cutting one of my animals open. That being said. I am soooooo sorry for your loss. To loss a beloved animal is horrible enough, but to loose 3 potential babies on top of that I know is heart breaking. Again I am sorry

Sorry for your loss. But its very common for that to happen with wild caughts.

Its events like yours, a perfectly good looking, normal feeding monitor that fails when asked to perform a normal function. That makes we wonder if the treatments that are commonly givin for parasites are effecting the monitors in other ways. I have experienced that a lot more commonly than I would like to admit, but it has been restricted to wild caughts.

I am not sure if its the cart or the horse. Whether its the abnormal bloom of parasite or the treatment that causes the damage. But its very common sense, healthy individuals do not magically die. Quick deaths seem to be related to organ failure. Most monitors have to be tortured for long periods to cause death. Again Sorry for your loss. F

Or are they toast for sure?

FR Nov 19, 2003 09:55 PM

Those are not eggs, they are unripened ovum. Normal Beccari eggs are very very large. F

I successfully hatched collared lizard eggs that I cut out of a dead female. The eggs also had no shell on them and it took some careful peeling of the clear membrane off of each egg. In the end, what have you got to lose? Cut them out and put them in an incubator. The worst that will happen is none of them will hatch, and you are guaranteed that same result if you do nothing. You have a chance, however small, of doing better than none. Good luck.

I do not have any experience with Black Tree's, and even more so no experience with BTM eggs.

I seem to remember bloodbat's thread somewhere of that poor collard, and that he was successful with the eggs. I'd give it a shot, like he said.. Nothing to lose

Thanks for the info. Oscar

Hi Bob,

Sorry to hear about your loss, she was a beautiful animal and I'm sure you were very excited with the possibility of eggs. My condolences.

Best regards,

Pam
