Bump on the side of head...

jediknightbria May 31, 2003 09:31 PM

One of my RES (approx. 2 in. long) has a bump on the side of his head...I don't know what it is, or exactly how long it's been there, but I just noticed it. It doesn't seem to bother him. What is this and should I be worried? Where can I find info on this?

Sounds like an ear abcess to me. I would consult a vet relatively soon. The chances of it going away are not good. You want to have it lanced and treated. Good Luck

I agree on the ear abscess. It will probably only get worse.

You are definitely going to need a vet for this one. Sooner is better, you don't want the animal to suffer.

My RES had this same problem. The vet lanced it and gave her antibiotics. She healed perfectly and is doing great.

Good luck,

some vets charge A LOT for ear abscess removal. ear abscess removal is a pretty simple procedure and some people will do it themselves.

How can I do it myself? What kind of antibiotics would I need? My dad's a doctor (though not a vet) and my mom works in a pharmacy so it would be simple enough to get what I need. I just don't want to harm my turtle. :/

I really don't know if this is the kind of thing you want to attempt on your own. I personally could not cut into the side of my turtle's head, it is just too icky! Besides, you are working right near the little guy's eyes with sharp instruments.

Also, a vet will be able to provide anesthesia so that the animal does not have to suffer, and will not have to be restrained by you while you do it.

Please think about having a vet handle this.

Good luck,

I will definitely talk to a vet about this, I don't want to take a chance with my turtle's life. I just hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg

Same is happening to my turtle. I'm saving up for her to get it removed at the vet but it's freakin 400 dollars up front not including other expenses. As much as I'd like to save money and do it myself, I just cant cut my turtle's head. Too gross. Vet. It sucks, but it's your baby. You're going to feel so bad if it dies and you knew you couldve prevented it. I hope mine will live til i get enough money! Good luck

I had this same thing done to my RES, and it was nowhere near $400, I think it was probably less than $100. I am in Columbus, Ohio, if that makes any difference.

Maybe you could shop around and see if another vet would charge less? If not, or if you want your current vet, tell him that you are having trouble paying. Most of the vets I know will be willing to set up some kind of payment plan so that your animal can get care now.

Good luck,

For a photo article on what is involved with ear abcess removal see the link below

Ear Infections and Surgery

Or you can go the the Main page linked below and then Click on Articles - then on Medicalto see this and other articles dealing with Veterinary problems.

I would see a vet experienced in the removal of these, they should be able to give you an estimate of the cost when you make the appointment.
