Why nasty responses to innocent questions???

jwr0201 May 31, 2003 09:42 PM

I am a little disappointed to see that there has been a bit of nasty replies to innocent questions posed by new leo owners as of late here on this board. What's up with that??? Last time I checked, this forum was listed as a free board for all to use and enjoy. It seems that a few with a little experience feel that it is justified to pick on and deride others who are simply looking for information and a little education. Notice that these instances are not by the more experienced breeders here... If posts are tasteful and not illegal, abusive or profane, anyone has a right request has a right to respectfully ask help from others. Have a heart and show some kindness. Remember, do unto others... RR

i agree...i ain't an expert and really don't consider anyone to be an expert at raising herps because once you say you know everything then boom something happens that takes you by surprise and you don't know whats wrong. i know their is alot of people whom buy geckos without much good info on them especially if they buy from a bad petstore and novice people ain't going to know they are buying a unhealthy gecko then they bring it home and it don't eat and they spend alot of money at a vets and then the gecko ends up dead or the person ends up clearing out their bank account for vet bills to fix the problems. i think we need to encourage reading up on a animal before purchasing and knowing what a healthy leo looks like or any other animal. i try to go to my local petstores and share my reptile know how and other animal know how on care and ask them if they can make those corrections and that it would probably increase their sales being the animals would be happier. This is just my 2 cents.

I'm a new leo owner, and have asked several "newbie-ish" questions here that I'm sure have caused much eye-rolling amongst the more experienced members of the forum, but all the replies I've had have been, first and most importantly, VERY informative and helpful in creating a better habitat for my new pets, and also (it seems to me) extremely well-intentioned by the posters. And trust me, I've asked some fairly silly questions. No one has tried to deride me or make me feel stupid for asking them, though.

The care sheets you find for leos on the internet seem often contradictory to me, so when I have a question about something that I'm unclear on, I've found this to be a FANTASTIC place to come to to get answers from a variety of people and benefit greatly from thier experience. Thanks to the good people here I now have my terarium (sp?) heated perfectly, have dumped the unhealthy substrate that we initially used in favor of reptile carpet, and have given Iggy and Pooh (ummm, yeah, the kiddies named them - I wanted to name them Cthulu and Nyarlathotep ) a diet that they like better.

I told the petstore person they did, and she was insisting that they don't...that is why I asked. I didn't mean to cause any problems...just a curious new leo owner. I just want to thank everybody who has been helpful in answering my questions, and I'm sorry again for causing any problems over the matter.

No need to apologise to anyone! No one is forcing anyone to read posts and questions here. By aksing questions you learn and can take better care of your animals! Remember, if it weren't for hobbiests and new ones at that, most breeders and pet shops would not have anyone to sell their leos to. Live & let live & show tolerance! RR

bmills Jun 01, 2003 02:36 PM

I appreciate all of your input. It has really helped out. I also appreciate the incouragement. I have been doing so much reading on them but as I read more there is more and more that contradicts itself, so I find by gathering all the information I can, and on here is a great way, I can make a very educated decision on the matter. Again, thanks to everyong who has helped me out.

I guess i should know better then to show a little bit of sense of humor around here. Everyone here takes everything so seriously, im sorry i keep on forgetting to leave me sense of humor at the door when i come into my computer room.

Hey, I didn't really take to much offense of it...I thought you were joking at first, and then when everybody said that about the comment, I thought you were known for saying stuff like that or something. I'm glad it has all been cleared up. No harm done. I'm glad I know that I can ask some "stupid" questions sometimes, lol, I am researching them a lot, but sometimes those awkward questions you have to ask because you cant' find them in a book. I swear though, that pet store lady was HORRIBLE!!! She was picking up the leos by their tales, and she was telling me they didn't ahve skulls, I was telling her that the leos tails will fall off, but she insisted they wouldn't. Guess what, i went back today, and the baby blizzrad didn'ty have a tial, I was assuming she was handling it more like that, and it feel off...it's so horrible. Again, no harm done, glad it was all cleared up.

footlonglizard Jun 01, 2003 05:29 PM

No point to say yes they have skulls again.

Shawn

bmills Jun 01, 2003 05:39 PM

Okay. I understand and get what you were saying. Sorry for the misunderstanding...hope all is good.

Josh06 Jun 01, 2003 06:35 PM

Ask as many questions as you want(even dumb ones). If anything it is helping other new people in the forum learn more. So, feel free to ask anything about leos that you dont know about, that's what the forum is for.
