Huh? Running on two legs???

veronicag Nov 19, 2003 05:27 PM

I just read this article from a Tampa Bay news website....

"Australia is home to some rather odd creatures. From worms that are 7 feet long to actual dragons, this wild habitat offers an amazing array of crazy creatures. In the spirit of Halloween, I thought I'd showcase one of the more well known creatures, the Bearded Dragon. Sadly, this reptile cannot breathe fire, but it can do some other cool things. Imagine seeing this lizard running through the outback on two legs!! It's true; in order to regulate its body temperature, Bearded Dragons will run on two legs. This allows air to cool its underside, yet make a speedy getaway.

Another way these guys cool down, or warm up is to actually change color. They will turn lighter to cool down, and darker to heat up. When they're not spending time working the tan, dragons will be looking for some grub, literally. They consume just about anything from bugs, to small mammals to good old veggies. Oh, by the way, the name Bearded Dragon comes from the fact that these lizards appear to have a beard when upset.

When threatened, Bearded Dragons will puff their throats, open their mouth and turn their chin black, giving them that five o' clock shadow. If you want to see our Bearded Dragons, make sure you stop by the Wild Australia horse carriage ride in Wallaroo Station, and you may just have that up close encounter you've always dreamed of!!"

Huh? Has anyone ever seen their beardie running on two legs to cool down?

I have never seen or heard of a bearded dragon running on two legs. But I have seen my dragon turn blackish on his back when basking.

I suspect the person doing the article was mixing up frilled dragons and bearded dragons (maybe even collared dragons..though I am not sure they are native to Australia).

I've seen my water dragon run on two legs, but never the beardie (that would probably be dangerous anyways, both my beardies have a tendency to run straight into things (walls, chairs etc) if they try to run to fast anyways).

I read this post earlier and just a minute ago I saw my beardie stand on two legs. However she didnt run but she stood on her two back legs for a while without anything supporting her.
