Plants in Bed a Beast....

iamkylemcandrews Nov 19, 2003 05:39 PM

Just switched over to BAB in my Whites Tree Frog terrarium... Put a inch layer of gravel and then a couple of inches of BAB. I just bought some Pothos since they seem to be the only plant that will do good in my low lighting. I just put them into the BAB substate and watered them, do I need to add anything to the BAB to help grow? It just seems like plants wouldnt do very good in BAB or is it just me? Any other advice on growing plants in Bed a Beast??

Thanks,
Kyle

Hi Kyle.

I use bed-a-beast (aka forest bed) for my blue tegu. I love the stuff. However, since it is ground up coconut shells it wouldn't have the minerals found in soil that nourish the plants. Nor would it have the beneficial bacteria that's in soil.

Perhaps if you add Miracle-Gro to the plant water it would be enough to keep your pothos healthy. Or maybe try some of the plant fertilizer spikes. Just keep an eye on the plant. If it doesn't look right you may need to go back to potting soil.

As long as the plants are in containers the fertilizer shouldn't leak into the cage.

hey kyle, I had a few anoles in using Bed A Beast and i put a pothos in it and it did fine. I had a nice root system and everything. I think with a good watering it will be fine.
