Nephrurus amyae breeding size????

KelliH Nov 19, 2003 06:13 PM

I have 1.2 of these awesome geckos and I am anxious to reproduce them. I have looked all over the Net and I cannot seem to find out how much they need to weigh before breeding them. Any helpful input would be appreciated very much.

Hello, to breed them for the females it is better to have about 55 - 60 gramms weight, more is always better. My females also like to take small pieces of white chalk from the bottom of the tank wich is important for building the eggs ( the chalk i use is sepia, the stuff you also but to birds cages, sorry i don´t know the engl. word for it because i am from germany, but anyway you have a lot experience with other geckos so you know how to prepare vitamins and calcium). The most people breed them to young in case of making money with the babies. Normaly it is good to wait until they are 1,5 years old so they reach the weight on a normal way. They are not that reproductive like other geckos, because they make about 2 - 3 clutches sometimes more and othertimes less. if you have any other questions, you can send me a mail.
Hope i could help you a little !

I appreciate your reply. I will wait a few more months before breeding mine. My larger female is around 50 grams but she is not even 1 year old yet. My other female is smaller and about the same age. I don't want to risk anything happening to my babies and I can wait to breed them.

Beautiful picture you posted!

Thanks Again..

These geckos shouldn't be bred until the females are at least 18-20 months, and as already stated, older/bigger is better. The females should be around 60 grams and very healthy active feeders. As if they aren't breeding will be very bad on them. Males, as with any species usually breed alot earlier, but I would wait and breed the male when he has a descent size as well. I know how hard it is to wait for them to put size on as I am waiting on some very beautiful knobs I have to get just large enough. I will be breeding them in January/Feb. Hope this helps.
