cbcandice Nov 19, 2003 06:41 PM

I recieved this snake in an uncommon manner. the previous owner, didn't know what it was, or what it ate. he gave it to me because he knew i wouldn't stop until i saved the poor, malnurished snake. please hep by giving any information you can about this snake. FYI i know it is not a smooth green. it's stomach has a blue tint, it is 2 1/2 ft, and it's eyes indicate it's diurnal.
thank you for reading my message

than maybe it's a rough green snake? Any other pics? It also looks like it can be an African bush snake, which look very similar, but grow a little bigger. Try lizards as that's what they eat (and most decent sized arboreal size eat lizards at some point in their life).

This snake is too large to be a Smooth Green and to short-headed to be a Rough Green. The blue tint to the side is also not typical of Rough Greensnakes (they have a yellow wash to the side).

I agree with the idea of it being one of the several species of African Bushsnakes (genus Philothamnus). Most of the species in this genus are frog eaters.

There is also another large species of Opheodrys from Asia, but I don't think it looks like that to me.

I agree, its an african bush snake, you can feed it green tree frogs or goldfish, let the goldfish flop around they won't pull them from the water. Its rear-fanged so be careful if your going to force feed it.

Without locality data ID is difficult as to which but irregularis is a good cantidate. From your discription it is a full adult. They feed on frogs and (preferred food of mine)lizards. Set up same as for Rough green. They are HARMLESS. In light of BGF's paper that has identified venom in minute quantities in a lot of previously harmless labeled snakes, this is one genus that I will stake my reputation on being totally harmless. I have kept at least 100 or more of various species of African green and have been bit dozens of times and for the life of me saw no sign of any effect. nor has anyone else I know. Good luck.
