Ig&SnakeOwner Nov 19, 2003 07:05 PM

I found a space in my room that could hold a chameleon cage ^_^ ( it was difficlut lol) anyways i figured i could have a cage 1'2" long, 1'4" tal, and 1'4" wide. i know it sounds small but chameleons dont get veryu big do they? i was wondering what would be the best type of chameleon for this size cage

No chameleon would fit in that type of cage.
The animal i think you are thinking of is call a green anole it is found in Florida and is manly green and brown.
but that is still too small of a cage.

you may be able to get a sigle Dart frog in there are two mantella frogs but not really any lizard.

Yes, some species are, but the main problem is even a cham of that size needs more space than your cage will offer. Chams need to be able to thermoregulate themselves by moving from a warm basking spot to a cooler more humid area, to drink from foliage, hunt, and hide from view. A cage that size won't offer much range. Also, chams need live foliage and so cages end up needing to be large enough for sturdy potted plants with some vertical structure. The minimium cage size for ANY of the arboreal chams (IMHO) is 5'x3'x2'. You might be thinking of what are called "pygmy" or "leaf" chams. Even they would need more space horizontally than this cage would give. The cb chams available on the market are all larger than 6-7".

We built massive cages for our chameleons, and each of them have about 8 real plants, 20 different sized bio vines, and they love it. People always are surprised when they see the size of the cage, and then see the size of Roan or Jade. They are always like "why did you make the cages so big?" and I always say, how would you feel if you lived in your bathroom? and people always get it. It makes total sense. A cage to small and you'll have unhappy chams. Bigger is better in my mind

If the pygmy chams are the ones you are thinking about let me make a few points besides the fact that you will need a cage much larger. Most folks like to get chams b/c of their color changes, prehensile tail, googly eyes - hey, they are pretty cool! BUT the pygmies are generally brown/brown green, have short tails, change patterns but not color (just more shades of brown and, most important, I personally would not recommend them as a first time cham. (they do have googly eyes!

I know everything we have said is probably discouraging and frustrating, but better to know now. You need to have the right space and researched the different species. Here are a few good sites to give you an idea of what they are all about. Btw, they are very high maintenance animals (and feeding them can get pricey.)
