New gecko hasn't eaten. questions.

CCappy175598 Nov 19, 2003 09:38 PM

I just bought 2 crested geckos at a retpile show from 2 different breeders. They are kept in different enclosures. The smaller female east fine and devours crickets, supplement, and turkey and peach baby food. The male however I have not seen eat yet. He is a tad on the skinnier side but not unhealthy. I know he was eating before I got him because he has pooped a few times. Hes in a 38 gal reptarium and Im thinking about moving him into a smaller enclosure to maybe promote him to look for food better. Ive hand fed him by holding the supplement/baby food mixture to his mouth and having him lick it out. But I would much rather him eat on his own and hunt for some crickets. Do you think its stress, and I should give him time to get used to his new enclosure? Also I've noticed that he is alot more skiddish then the female who climbs right on my hand. He will run the other way and look for a place to hide. I think he's scared and still nervouse about his new home, what about you guys?

thanks,
Carly

A smaller enclosure would be much better...especially if it is still growing.

I've got a 10 month old female in a 10 gal and she eats crickets fine but still hasn't taken a liking to fruit...I usually put some peach baby food in a syringe, hold her in my hand gently and slowly squeeze the end of the syringe by her mouth and she will lick it from the syringe until it is gone. I do this once every two days plus she gets a dish of it in her enclosure...it may just be getting used to her enclosure...give it a few days.

but I would recommend a smaller tank and to try the syringe...it works...also I wouldn't give them the turkey baby food unless you plan on taking them off of crickets...too much protien for them can be bad.

so a ten gal would be fine for a 9 month old male? Ill try to make room for it somewhere. Haha. He likes eating out of my hand, I hope he doesn't get used to it.

I have a 10 month old female in a 10 gal...I prefer to keep animals that are having trouble in smaller enclosures so they can find their water, food, crickets...easier. Also I can observe their behavior better too. But once he is a little bigger and finding his way around ok then I'd put them in a 20 gal. Cresties don't need a huge cage...I'd say you could fit a male and 3 females in a 25 gal. I do this for breeding them, then later in the year I take the male out and put him in a 10 gal...works for me.
