Cricket Question

XxJackalxX Nov 19, 2003 09:54 PM

I feed live crickets to Sobee as it seems to be his favorite, and like normal I dust them with vitimen powder, but this isn't the simplist thing to do. As of now I've resorted to droping the crickets into a plastic baggie and then dusting them but its messy. Does anyone have a better method of dusting their crickets? Any help would be great.

Thats what I do when I feed crickets, I just put them in a ziploc baggie add the supplement and shake them up until they are covered, its shake and bake.

I'm not really sure what it so messy about it, my hands will get full of the powdered supplement, but you can always wash them afterwards.

If you dont want to do that method anymore, try getting your geckos to eat mealworms.

Back in the day when i used crickets (glad thats over), I used the same method. I wouold put them in a zip lock (which I zipped)
and then shake them up.Then i would tilt the bag after opening it over the tank and they would just work their way down and jump out to the floor of tha tank themselves. No mess this way, not even on your hands.

Back when I fed crickets (the little hellions!) this is how I went about dusting them.

1) Scoop your crickets up and shake them in a bag like you are already doing.

2) Get two identical tall plastic cups. Using a soldering iron burn tons of small holes into the bottom of one cup (especially around the edges). The cup with the holes will act as a sifter of sorts.

The cup with the holes burned in it will slide inside the cup without the holes. Pour the contents of your "shake and bake" bag into the plastic cup (powder and crickets). You can then shake the powder out of the cup with the holes, the powder will fall into the second cup and you will be left with dusted crickets.

The whole process takes under 30 seconds, just make sure you have lots of small holes burned into the "shaker" cup.

I hope I wasn't too confusing with my explanation. If you have any questions let me know.

That is the easiest way I have found to dust my crickets. Once you have sifted the powder out you can shake the crickets directly from the cup into your geckos enclosures.

When I used to feed crickets, I'd put them into a disposable plastic container, sprinkle the calcium, put the plastic lid on, and then shake the container from side to side. It was always a lot easier than trying to get the crickets and calcium into a bag.

the small soup containers work great
just put the container in the tank with the crickets
they actually jump in and cannot get out
then put the powder in, the lid on, shake off any on the outside
and open in the gecks tank (after a gentile shake)

Since I am Chinese and work at a Chinese restaurant, I get dibs on the containers.
