Mandarin sichuan province, china

RandyWhittington Nov 19, 2003 10:11 PM

This male and the female below are about an inch or two shy of 3ft as yearlings. The hatchling below is from the same province but a different bloodline. The hatchlings are very large just as these were and show much red as hatchlings just as these did. Later, Randy Whittington

Beautiful snakes, Randy, and good info. Can you say what the source of these snakes was? Also, how big do you think this form will get eventually? Thanks, TC.

Hey Terry,
I got them from Brian Barczyk. When I got the first pair from him he told me the history of how he got his breeders and was very confident of their background. He gave me a pretty detailed history at the time.
He had told me how big some of his breeders were at the time but I cant remember exactly. I know some where well over 4 and I think around or just over the 5ft mark but might be even larger.
My pair that are just over a year would only eat 3 or 4 meals before being brumated their first winter. After brumation they ate thawed like pigs all year and have up until this past week when I cut them off for up coming brumation in a couple of weeks. I did not even push them this year and with them only eating 3 or 4 meals before brumation last year and almost getting to 3ft already I imagine they can get rather large eventually.
Here is a old picture of one of the yearlings.

Thanks, Randy. Very good information. I hope they do get that large size. Keep us posted on that. Later....

Is the red a desired trait?
Does the color change at all as they age?

I think some like the red and some dont. I guess it's just a matter of opinion.
They seem to be born with it and as they grow it just becomes more noticeable. It tends to be in the center of each scale and be bordered with gray around the edges. As they grow and the scale grows the red in the center gets to be a larger area and is more noticeable.
I personally like the red but then again I like ones with the solid grey background too. Later, Randy W.
