Red eye tree frog shedding skin?

hlpdex Nov 19, 2003 10:39 PM

I've had this guy for several months. 10 gal. tank, tree, shallow dish of water and repti-bark on the bottom. The tank is partially covered and I have a black light to keep him warm. Temp averages 75 degrees.

A couple of times in the past month he apears to shed a layer of skin. I mist his enclosure regularly.

Do they typically shed their skin? I haven't seen him eat the skin. One small section is dried up in the enclosure. I haven't removed it yet.

He's been eating normally but appears a little bony. I coat the crickets with calcium powder.

Any information is helpful. Thanks.

i wouldnt worry about the shedding,it is normal. what i would worry about is the setup hes in. if hes still skinyn after eating he might have an impaction or something. with repti-bark as the substrate in your tank,i wouldnt doubt it.an impaction is when the frog will go for the prey(crickets)and grab something else and swallow it. you need to get a good substrate liek bed a beast(coconut fiber bricks, also under the name eco-earth) or some unfertilized, clean top soil with none of those styrofoam balls in it. get a good heat lamp on him. a blackligh is okay toobtain a night time temp(about 75 degrees) get a blue bulb for daytime to keep the tank about 80-85. humidity should be about 70% or higher for red eyes. good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. I'll go to the pet store tonight. Does the topsoil go on the bottom and the coconut bark on the top?

Thanks much!!
