WTF with wound on back. . . . won't heal

fisherk2 Nov 19, 2003 11:59 PM

I have an otherwise healthy and happy male white's tree frog. He is very active and eats like a pig. However, he has an 6-8 week old wound on his back. It was inflicted by a cage-mate who was diving for a cricket. It is smaller than it used to be, but for the last 4 weeks or so it had completely stopped trying to heal. I've tried triple antibiotic ointment but it doesn't help. The wound isn't infected and it's not getting any bigger. It just won't heal up. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do to fix it? Thanks!

Can't really say what is going on. If it is eating, just continue applying the antibiotic ointment. I think you could do more to correct the original problem by placing each species in their own tank. What WAS the cagemate?

This wound occured at the petstore I work at. He was in an enclosure with 2 other juvie WTF, and one of his buddies accidentally bit him while diving for a cricket. After that incident, he was placed in a back room to heal and after 2 weeks of care someone moron left the lid off of his cage and he escaped. He was found in the sink with dirty dishes a month later. He was placed back in the wellness area, and the next day when I came in to check on him another moron had written "soak in iodine solution once daily until healed" on his care sheet. That's when I decided to adopt him. Right now he is still a juvenile and is housed in a 20gal tall. The only trouble I've had with him is this wound that won't heal.

Next time you respond to someone's question, please don't assume that the person you're talking to is an idiot.

I don't think he meant to make it sound like you were an idiot hun, it just wasn't mentioned in your original post what species the cagemate was that bit him.

I will never apologize for something that wasn't included in the original post. Besides, this is text with no inflection.

No one is assuming you're an idiot, but a frog won't usually do that to another frog... and, frankly, we're used to starting at the bottom with people and working up because we don't want to miss something because we're scared of underestimating. I hope you understand, I'm sure no harm was intended.

Anyway, is there a vet who checks the pets at the store you work at that could look the frog over? I have two GTF that used to have small wounds that took seemingly forever to heal. I know one of them was scratched by a sharpish rock I had in their tank, but I forgot how the other got it... but the wounds did heal eventually and I smartened up and never let it happen again! The anti-biotic should do it, but since you're the one looking at it you can probably tell if it looks really bad or does seem to be healing. I hope the frog gets better, it really deserves it after everything at that pet store, and I think it'll do okay. Keep us posted.
