Help With an American Bullfrog's Diet

turtlesong Nov 20, 2003 03:38 AM

I need to know exactly what to start feeding a small American bull frog, as I'm running out of live food now that winter is approaching and the petstores in Korea do not sell any live crickets.

I've fed unfrozen minnows to previous bullfrogs I've owned, but this one isn't taking the bait yet. I could start getting feeder gold fish, but that's a chore to get it to catch. Night crawlers are rare here too, so I'm at a loss.

Any bright ideas? Is fish okay for frogs? Help, please.

Are there earth worms in Korea? If there are, grab a shovel and collect some frog food!

Sorry. Are there any other wild insects you could collect and feed?

Is it possible to get crickets shipped to you? Fish are really not the best food for frogs, because they can harbor some really nasty parasites.

Naw, I don't think it's possible, seeing they'd have to come a long distance and not really be worth it. But I'll try.

I fed the bulfie a small feeder goldfish last night, and might do some more. Parasites, you say? But what kind of food, then, should I feed 'em? Or how about frozen, or dead fish?

In the past I had bullfrogs I tricked into thinking dangling fish on a string was live food which they devoured readily. I did this for a couple of months, no problems. Even fed 'em eels, or some kind of eel here.

I don't know what else to turn to. Fed 'em five flies today and some worms. But is this enough for his diet? Keep me posted, please. Need a frog-lovers care.

I would try to go with the frozen, thawed fish. This would kill off any parasites.
I guess if all else fails, it would be better to feed the live fish than for the frog to starve. I would only use healthy-looking "pet" type goldfish though, not the feeder types which are in crowded conditions.
I would be worried, though, about only having one type of food. A diet of only fish would be a bad thing, so you may want to look into getting the cockroaches as others suggested. That, or crickets; there may be a place that delivers worldwide.

Food is easy-just turn on your outdoor light to attract bugs, and get a net and the food comes to you.

Can you get feeder cockroaches? Madagaster cockroaches are slow moving, large, and very nutritious. They breed like crazy too.

WARNING #1: In Florida it is illegal to own them so this option is NOT available to us; however, may be legal where you live.

WARNING #2: Baby cockroaches are born escape artists. Tiny as they are and an escape route, your home will be full of these buggers in no time! They say a coat of vasaline jelly around the upper tank helps, but I had crickets escape even with this.

But you get unlimited food supplies with cockroaches. Gutload and occasionally dust with vitamin and calcium with D3 before feeding.
