Opinions?

sf Nov 20, 2003 07:16 AM

I was lucky enough to recently purchase a 100% het pied male, which I am hoping to breed in the near future (later this season) to 2 normal females. In your opinion, would it be more beneficial to hold back all of the female offspring (50% hets) to breed back to the male, or sell off the hets to purchase 1 100% het female? I know a lot depends on number of female offspring to increase odds, etc. Just wondering what you would do...

Thanks,
Scott

Well, just like you said, it all depends on the number of females. If you get, say a clutch of 7 eggs, and 4 are females, I would keep them and breed the father back to all 4 of them. Now if you got 2 females and 5 males, I would work on a trade or sell them. That's just what I'd do. Good luck!

I would holdback all the females and then breed back to dad in a few years.

I would definitely hold back whatever females you hatch. I would also, between now and the time you intend to breed your male, keep you eyes open for a few more females. If a male is old enough and big enough to breed 2 females... he is definitely capable of breeding 5.

Remember... it is not easy to get 100% of you females that have been bred to lay eggs. By breeding 5 females, you are more likely to get 2-3 clutches than breeding 2-3 females.

Good luck with it...

Thank you all for the input. Hopefully I will luck out and get a bunch of 50% females from the breeding. I will also keep my open for some more adult female normals, but we all know the chances of that at this time of year! Thanks again
