Salamander finally ate a WORM!!!

Tadpoleo Nov 20, 2003 10:22 AM

I didn't even have to go for a whole week without feeding him, he must have been just hungry enough to eat something (finally) other than a cricket. My question: I have read somewhere that to keep worms for more than a day might result in bacterial growth in the dirt and in the worm, and thus harm the salamander when he eats it----I can dig my own fresh worms for now, but winter is coming, so I will have to purchase them from a bait shop soon. How does everyone else store their worms without risk of bacteria/mold/etc.? Or is this really even a concern I should worry about? Also, do your sallies refuse food after a couple helpings of a cricket or 2 or a worm or 2? I used to have a salamander who would eat anything you put in front of him, but the guy I have now stops after either 2 or 3 crickets or, as in yesterday's case, a worm and a cricket.

Congratulations. You must feel very relieved. I know I would.

I keep my worms in the styrofoam container and earth that they were in when I bought them. I put it in a sack, but not tightly shut, so they can get air. More to disguise from my husband. Keep in the vegetable crisper. They seem to do fine; I've sometimes had nightcrawlers for 6 weeks, when I also had other food available, and the soil never got nasty. Just hope my husband never discovers I'm keeping worms in the fridge!!!

Can't say I've ever had a problem with Jaws telling me he's full. Sometimes he'll slow down, pause a minute, I guess to let the food get down his throat a millimeter or so, and then he's right back for more. Don't know how much he would eat if I just kept feeding him.

Hee hee, Jaws is the guy who lives in your bathroom and scares your stepdaughters, isn't he!! What a dude! You'll have to take a picture of him and post it sometime, preferably in action, lunging at an unsuspecting victim using the toilet....!

Being a total moron about computers, I have no idea how to post a photo on this, even though I do have a digital camera.

Yea, Jaws is quite the fellow. I think part of it is that he actually makes noise. You can here this little soft "smack" when he snaps his jaws together. And he bashes his nose against the glass so hard, I'm sure someday he'll give himself a concussion.

And then how will I wrap a bandage around that tiny little skull?

Jaws sounds too cool! Dang, I have no idea how you would post a photo on here either.....if I find out, I'll post ya, because the world needs to see Mr. Jaws.
