Moving woes with my corn

snoderly Nov 20, 2003 01:23 PM

Hi there

I am moving to alaska in January and I have a little problem...
I really love having a corn snake but I am driving through canada and into alaska. It's going to be a 3000+ mile drive through sub-zero weather and several hotel stops. I am already taking my pekingese, St. bernard and Cockatiel on the trip. Do you think my corn would survive the trip? Im not sure that it would be good for him...

maybe you could have a friend hold on to him, and then when you are settled in up there in alaska he could be shipped?

As long as you get some 40 hour heat packs and replace them as the heat wears off, your corn will probably be fine. Also, take a heat pad that you can plug in with you and keep your corn in a sterilite box with holes drilled in it-put a rubber band around it to keep the lid on. Snakes are easier to transport than most other animals.

I would not chance shipping him. I would take him. I would not feed him for a couple of weeks, pack him in a pillow case with several paper towels, then in a small box, and keep him right in the seat next to you. Take him in the hotel rooms, take him in the restraunts and just set the box down beside you, etc. You can control his temperature a lot better than UPS or FedEx can. And you might hold him a little bit during the trip to break up some of the boredom.

Hi,

I just moved to Alaska from Virginia this summer, the temps weren't a problem but for you they will be. I brought my 2 dachshunds, cat, 8 mice, 2 leopard geckos, and 6 corns. If you can not ship your corn ahead of time then I suggest making some arrangements to help him stay warm. Put him in a little container(w/ air holes)in a suitcase or bag. every time you stop for the night take the bag in the hotel room and give him some water. he should be fine as long as he stays out of the cold/draft for the most part. If you don't feel safe taking him with you then maybe we can arrange something. You could ship him to me and i will care for him till you get here. What part of Alaska are you moving to? I live in Anchorage. E-mail me if you need any more help
