>>I have been trying to find some information on Mimophis mahafalensis and have only found a couple things in some books. Does anyone out there have any experience with this False Racer from Madagascar? I'd be interested in hearing about how toxic their bite is, and how the species was kept successfully in captivity. Thanks.
Hi mate,
Unlike the rest of the Madagascar 'colubrids', which are in the Pseudoxyrhophiinae snake family, Mimophis is in the Psammophiinae snake family (along with Hemirhagerrhis, Malpolon, Psammophis, Psammophylax and Rhamphiophis). Interestingly enough, these two snake families are actually the closest 'colubrids' to the elapids, and are vastly more related to a cobra than to a corn snake. We haven't looked at Mimophis yet but we have looked at Psammophis (which turned out to have massive venom glands and very complex venom). I've uploaded the paper to the publications section of my page.
Cheers
B
