Introducing 2 day geckos?

juliecwuk Nov 20, 2003 04:01 PM

Hi all,

I am planning on introducing my female madagascan giant day gecko into my males vivarium ASAP. I was after a few suggestions/advice on the best way to catch her and then the best way to put them together. Would it be better to introduce them in the night when they are less active? Would this reduce the stress that may be caused?

Any advice is welcome.

Thank you

Julie

Introduction in the late evening in fact is recommendable. Anyhow, very likely the male will rape the female several times in the first days. It would be better for her if you introduce him into her cage, where he feels not at home.

I have introduced them into a completely new vivarium which neither of them had been in. This worked out really well but i have a few queries regarding their behaviour.

I was informed that 'head bobbing' and 'tongue flicking' is good news from the male. They have both been doing this on various occasions. However, i have just been watching them for a while and the female seems to be chasing/attacking the male. Is this normal or is she just getting annoyed by him?

they have only been together a couple of days, so they are just getting used to each other, will this chasing calm down after a while?

Thanks

Julie

Yes, thats very normal. Even animals which already lived together normally start chaseing aroudn each other if itnroduced into a new enclosure.
Thsi is largely sex independent and normally ceases within 7 to 10 days.

Hope that helps

Thanks Ingo. I was hoping that it will calm down a bit in there as i dont want either of them to end up hurt! They seem to just be finding their own space! Poor Mr Monster has been on his own for quite a while so it is prob a bit of a shock to have to share a viv again, and to have a female! lucky him!

Thanks again

Julie
