Home Improvement Store Full Spectrum vs. Pet Shop Full Spectrum Fluorescents

Guyver Feb 08, 2003 08:34 PM

Any knowledgeable commentary in regard to the full spectrum fluorescent bulbs sold at home improvement stores in comparison to those sold at your local pet shop / reptile shop? Is it basically marketing ploys to get you to spend more on the "specialty" bulbs or is there really a difference?

The Full Spectrum bulbs at home improvement stores typically don't have the proper levels of UVB for species like Iguanas. However, monitors don't have the UVB requirement that Iguanas do. I use regular flourescent bulbs (for light) and it works just fine for my monitor.

Get all of the vitamin D3 they need from animal fat. Insect diets need vitamin supplement. If you want a flourescent light then any cheap light will work.
