lanierreptiles Nov 20, 2003 05:29 PM

I have ran out of insulated shipping boxes and the place where I get mine have closed up shop. I have tried all of the postal shops...any ideas where I can get bulk insulated shipping boxes at a reasonable price? Much appreciated!

I don't know what type of store you were getting them from that "Closed Up" but most places that carry fish have insulated boxes that are exactly the same as reptile boxes but insted of saying "Reptile" they say "Tropical Fish" I have found that at my Ace Hardware store that sells pets/fish they have a large quantity of extra insulated boxes. I get mine for $3.00 each. It's good place to start. I have also bought shipping boxes from Superior the boxes some collapsed and they are about half the size of the normal shipping boxes.

The boxes that fish are shipped in are perfect, but I haven't been able to find fish boxes at the stores around us because they keep them and reuse them. So I went on line and found a company that makes the shipping boxes. Fortunately for us we live close enough for free delivery, because to have 30 boxes around 18x12x13 shipped by UPS is incredibly expensive. We use boxes that have 1 1/2 inch thick molded insulation that will hold 200 lbs. of pressure. When you are shipping animals you should not risk their lives in some of the flimsy boxes that are out there on the market. Go on line and see if their is a company near you that makes packaging for specialty foods, seafood, biotech.....

Here is one thing I didn't think of. A while back my wife's mom asked us to help out at the clinic by cleaning in the evenings. You know small town, everyone helps out when others are not available!! So for about a week my wife and I would clean the clinic everynight. When I went into the storage room one night I noticed over 100 insulated boxes and asked what they were used for, these were slightly talling than normal shipping boxes but a little bit smaller around, I was told that is what they use to transport medical samples. Of course my first question was how sterile are they? I was assured that any containers that they would consider contaminated were destroyed. I never got around to using them or even asking if I could use them. Gail, when you said Biotech it made me think of that story. So if you live in a small town and have a local clinic maybe they could even help out.

On another shipping note: I just received a coupld of snakes from Maryland to Wisconsin overnight. The shipping took 2" sheets of pink insulation board and lined a cardboard box with it, he put in two 40 hour heat pack, when I opened the box it was in the mid 80's. When I say lined the cardboard I mean top bottom and all 4 sides. It worked very well...

Chris gave you some good advice on Superior Enterprise, I've done business with them before and have always been happy, And Gail and Native gave some good alternatives. Here is another company to look at. The boxes are more expensive, but solid and I think more durable. ULINE foam shipping boxes. I've done business with them as well and they are VERY quick in getting supplys to me. (of course they have a shipping hub about 30 miles away from me) It's always good to have multiple options.

We get the large box that cost $37 from our company for under $8 cardboard box and inch and a half molded insulation....8 bucks is a great price, but who could afford $33-$37 a box, they are great boxes but man does that raise the cost of shipping......

Thank you for the URL Gail. It's always good to have alternate places to go for your supplies. You just never know when your usual sources can just dry up and blow away. True for supplys as well as forums...
