Big size difference. Will this work?

rudedogsurfrat Nov 20, 2003 07:05 PM

He is 18.5" 60g and she is 25" 168g.
He may look more like a snack than a mate.

it will work just fine.

I don't foresee a problem with the length of the adults, but I do foresee a problem with her general condition. She looks much too thin to breed to me. For comparison, I have a 23 inch female that weighs 290 grams who isn't really fat. You will need to put some weight on that girl before you will breed her succesfully IMHO.

Good thing I dont' cool them down until January. That will give me time to fatten them up a bit.
My other female has been off of feed for a month. Should I be concerned?

I don't know that I would be concerned, but if she isn't feeding, I would go ahead and cool her down.
As for the thin snake, I would try to keep her feeding. Regular small meals are much better than large meals. So you are better off giving her 1 medium mouse every week than two or three every 10 days.

These are WC snakes I take it. I would watch the thin female for evidence of parasites. It might be worthwhile to perform a fecal flotation if you have access to a microscope.

they aren't wc.
What makes you think they are? Out of curiosity.

I would also guess that the female is wild. Most captive born and long term nasicus are considerably more plump than your snake. You may have purchased the snakes under the pretense that they were cb animals, but I really doubt that claim. Who did you purchase them from? Shane

rudedogsurfrat Nov 22, 2003 10:18 PM

I got the snake in a trade with a local reptile store here in South Orange County. She recieved it from a trade with some "unknown". So in truth it is possible that this is a wc animal. I have some of the litter she produced this year. But for all I know that could be untrue as well. Who knows. If she was WC then that would explain alot. Like how she hates attention and how she regurgitates alot if disturbed. She does eat rodents though. No problem.

Does anyone know if Wild Caught are prone to Cannibalism?
That would not be cool if it were true.

Rudy, I really wouldn't worry about the size difference, especially if you keep them seperate except during the breeding season. Although nasicus are much more general predators than platyrhinos, I think the chances are quite remote that cannibalism would occur. Given their ease of maintenance and enclosures (=cheap), I would house them seperately. After reading your comments about it's behavior and knack for regurging (and that it came from a petstore), I would now put money on the fact that it is a wild snake. Follow chrish's advice with smaller food items more frequently, and you should see some weight gain in a relatively short amount of time. Taking it to a vet for a fecal float also isn't a bad idea, but if it steadily puts on weight, you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck. Shane
