getting off crix..need feeder info

second_hand_rose Nov 20, 2003 07:18 PM

Okay we've had enough of the smelly, eat your cage pain in my butt crickets. After dicovering yet another hole in Sanchoz's cage we tried cup feeding him. Well he wont do it. He starved himself 3 days, then I threw 4 crix in and he gobbled them up. I re-tried the cup thing and no go.
guess he likes the hunt...

This is a pain, and I was thinking about switching him off crix anyways and what better time than now... We buy his food once a week from a good pet shop where we bought Sanchoz from.

My question to all you is whats a good mix of other feeders to feed him daily. I've only give him worms as treats now I want to make them the main course. Also how do you keep them? What would I need to feed them and keep them alive tilI I could get to the store next?

Should I just give him one kind or mix it up?

Silkworms work great.i rotate my feederss sometimes, crix for 2weeks, then silkys for 2 weeks but that's just me dont know if it's right or not.

I'm starting my orange head roach colony next week. All of my herps LOVE silkworms. Roaches are taken very well, once they realize that they're prey items, and not cagemates (found my beardies snuggling with a hissing roach until she actually licked it and decided it was tasty).

when you say "worms" are you referring to silkworms? if so, see my post above to jovana about caring for silkies. I am making the switch to silkies and away from crix, but realize I will have to do the crix a little longer while I get my colony going. Buying them weekly at a pet store gets pricey - no?

hope this helps!

Its not that expensive if you dont have to worry about breeding, feeding and a whole lotta care. I can get 100 crix for 8 bucks. Not that cheap considering you guys buy bulk, but its not that bad.

They last me a week. I have to do very little gutloading just for the week and dont have to worry about the whole breeding and care of them.

Its not that I'm lazy I just dont like bugs lol

I hear ya! 6-leggers aren't for everyone I do have a question, though - what do you mean you have to do very little gutloading? Even from a good pet store the chances that the crix are eating healthy/balanced food, which ultimatly goes into your cham, is not very good. Also the parasite issue...clear their gut for a few days before feeding to your chams.

You are quite fortunate to have found a pet store owner like that! Buddies are good
