trip to petsmart and a question?

trevoro Nov 20, 2003 09:11 PM

i went to petsmart just to browse around while waiting for something to be put together at home depot today. i was taking a look at the bearded dragons they had. there were 2 in a 20 gallon aquarium. everything looked okay to me except the food in the tank. it looked to me like they had taked a bag of green giant mix veggies(corn, cut green beans, lima beans, and diced carrots). i'm fairly new to beardies but this seemed wrong to me. the most disturbing thing was the size of the veggies in comparison to the beardies. the lima beans were as big as their head, beans were longer than their head, carrots and corn were close but still probably a bit too big. and humans can barely digest corn properly so how well to beardies do with it?

if i'm wrong here someone let me know, because i plan to go to the store with some infomation tomorrow to show them proper feeding.

forgot to mention they were babies around 4-5 inches long.

to finely dice the veggies, and add some greens in, like dandelion or collard. If you act really nice about it they'll probably listen. Make remarks about how nice the setups look there in comparison to the other places you have seen or heard about. Compliment them on their knowledge or something. That kind of thing always seems to work.

Just don't try to act all high and mighty when you talk to them. For the most part, they are doing the right thing.

Yes, I agree. I went to a PetSmart last weekend, and they had 2 itsy bitsy baby beardeds in there with a bunch of giant crickets. I got a salesperson, and told them the crickets were too big, they could cause impaction (these guys were not even a month old I don't think), anyways, he said he did not have smaller crickets, but then I went to BUY crickets from them, and they do have small 1/4 crickets. I got another salesperson, and just kind of told her that it would make me sleep better that night if I knew they took the large crickets out and gave them the small ones. She was very nice, and did it. Then she asked if I was interested in one. Of course I was, BUT, I have 2 already, and next season some more little ones to feed I hope, so I did not get one. It all depends on how you approach them about it I think.

thanks
i wouldn't want to act all high and mighty. it would probably put them on the defensive and wouldn't listen to anything i said.

thanks again for all the advice

well at least they put veggies in, at the petsmart that i work at they won't listen or remember that beardies like that, yea, so pretty much just whenever i go in, i grab an apple (the only kinda fruit or veggie we have there) cut off a small peice and hand feed it to them, they usually seem to really like it, btw is that a sign of being healthy, just out of curiosity, or does it at least mean that they are more likely to eat more salad than crix when they are older?
