Questions about feeding veggies...

-ryan- Nov 20, 2003 10:03 PM

My dragon sidney doesn't seem to be eating any of his veggies, or he at least isn't eating enough for me to be able to tell that he is. I am pretty sure he isn't eating any though. He used to east some when I used to give him carrots, but the vet told me that carrots are harder for them to digest. Can I still give him carrots at least to intice him to eat some of the veggies? He doesn't seem very interested in greens and peas. I also have tried putting raspberries in and he didn't try them either. Do you have any ideas about what I could possibly do to get him to start eating his veggies. I'm worried because I have heard that if he eats too much protein and not enough veggies he can get kidney disease or something. Right now he's about 1 and a half years old, and I assumed he would be eating mainly veggies by now, but he just likes his crickets. Here's a couple ideas I had, add to them if you have any of your own please.

-Give him a little bit of finely chopped carrot (the orange seems to intice him), and if the carrots do start to constipate him (he has been going more often now, as uppossed to once a week like before) start taking them out and giving him more greens and other veggies.

-If he doesn't eat the vegetables tomorrow, don't feed him crickets that night and try to get him to eat the greens the next morning (I'm not sure if I'd want to do this more than one day though, I don't want him to go hungry).

-He loves waxworms, even though he hasn't had them in a while. I was thinking about buying some and mixing a couple in with the veggies and a couple on top so the movement will get him to eat the vegetables and eventually realize they are good to eat. I was thinking that if once with the waxworms wasn't enough, give them to him in the greens everyday, but a little less everyday.

got any other ideas? I want him to start eating the vegetables regularly. I'm not sure if he's done growing completely though (he's 17" right now) even though he is a little over a year and a half old. He has grown a little even in just the past month or two. Maybe growing is making him not want to eat as much. I was also thinking it might be the dish I'm using? It's green too and I thought that might be confusing him, like making him think that since the dish isn't edible, the food isn't either? I'll try the brown dish tomorrow, even though it's really big. maybe that will help attract his attention.

You're on the right track. Give him his salad in the morning with waxworms/carrots in the veggies.
He's considered an adult, so he can go a couple days w/o crickets. Adults should be eating 80% greens and 20% protein. Mine also still would rather have crickets or worms then anything but I only give them crickets/worms 2-3 x a week.
Too much protein can cause fatty liver disease.
I think it's harder for you to hold out on crix then it is for him.

I have a couple of suggestions...

1) at the grocery store, you can buy bags of mixed baby greens...get that...they have lots of color and you could put some pieces of red, yellow & orange bell peppers on top to entice him

2) mix fruit with the greens...try pomegranate

3) if you put worms in with the veggies, it needs to be a deep enuf bowl so that the worms don't get out. I have had that happen plenty of times. I find their shell later when cleaning out the cage.

Good luck...i am working at getting my 6 month old off of crix now and onto greens and pellets. These suggestions seem to work for me.
