How long do your mealworms last?

calgecko Nov 20, 2003 10:52 PM

I usually buy them in the small plastic tubs (50 count) from Petco or Petsmart... I think they're a few bucks per tub... and I keep them in the fridge... they usually last a couple weeks.. but when I take a few out and put them in the 'food dish' in the gecko's tank, if they're uneaten, I notice within a few days that they're shriveled up and dead, or they shed their skin and look weird.. kind of an off white color with little stubble things on the side that don't quite look like legs.. no idea what these are considered, because I thought mealworms turned into beetles (although I've never seen this).. and if one did turn into a beetle, would it be dangerous to my leo?

I keep a bit of moisture in the leo dish as well, some Fluker's or a bit of veggie, to keep the mealies alive. What you're describing is an "alien". It will take about a week to mature into a beetle. Your leo can eat mealies, aliens or beetles. All are fine. One of my leos shows a clear preference for the beetles. They move a lot more than the other 2 stages & are nice & crunchy!
