Raisin mealworm moisture source & substrate-moisture issue.

sotik Nov 21, 2003 01:43 AM

Has anyone thought about using raisins as a source of moisture for their mealworms?

They don't mold. They're high in fiber, and if you buy the right brand they're fairly moist. But do they provide enough moisture to make them a worthwhile addition to the mealworms' diet?

I use carrots. I have some raisins, though (of course, I may end up eating them before the mealworms).

Also, on a related tangent, my substrate seems to retain the moisture from the carrots I place in it. Everything is just slightly damp. Anyone have any tips or ideas for helping the substrate to remain as dry as possible?

I use carrots as moisture, too. They eat right through the paper towels (and I have to be careful taking the paper towels out, because they zquueze between the two-ply). However, the substrate is still kinda moist. :/

Also, they seem not to be touching the raisins (then again the carrots are in there and those provde a lot more moisture). I was wondering if it'd provide a good moderate-term solution (for when I'm out of town for a week or so).

Glad that you've got 5 now. Are you going to try to raise mealies?
