What would you call these unique looking ball pythons??? *pics*

chrisssanjose Nov 21, 2003 04:02 AM

Hi All,

I have these 2 very unique looking ball pythons that I'm not
really sure what to call. They are definitely different than
most other balls that I've got. I'm not claiming they are
genetic, but they definitely look different (of course it is
hard to get good photos of ball pythons...). I'm wondering
what others would think of them.

They are all females and ~1100g each. The one on the right
bottom is slightly darker than what I would call a 'normal'
ball, but not that much darker. The one in the middle has a
very strong greenish color, with a very clean pattern.
The one on the top left is a very pale looking ball,
and has that tanish semi broken stripe running down its back.
The best way to describe her color is tan and black (not much
brown).

Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
ChrisS - SanJose

Hello peoples

Ya know, they all look normal to me. But there are a few high-dollar morphs out there that look pretty normal to me, too.

"Normal" or not, they're beauties.

I need some more females

They look awesome, and have some nice size to them. For all the people making offers on them, you might just have to wait untill Chris proves them out. 100% hets will be $45,000. LOL, But you will get one for half off if you come up with a good morph name! They might be hets and you just don't know it yet. You never know.........I woud breed a pastel to all of them. All the normals would be 100% het for ????, and the others will be some nice looking pastels that are also hets. I have an invisiball that I might consider trading for those Chris. Attatched to this message is a pic. Let me know what you think. Aint he somethin' special? Yeah! Some people say he is just imagionary, but I know he is there, especially when I need someone to talk to. I need a lot of cash for him because after all, he is my best friend. His name is fred but sometimes goes by the name Susan.

Nice animals Chris!! I think that's a perfect example of how P. regius can vary in color/pattern in the "wild type" or "normal" specimens. They're lookers for sure, but I'd still say they're just very nice normals. I've seen so much variety in normal animals, and I have held back some killer animals just for that same reason, they're standouts, fancier than most, but still considered normals in most people's opinions...just my 2 cents.

Normals but very nice ones. Like the one with the phantomish pattern, looks better then the normal blotches.
But bottom line is they are normal, i cant work out why people think theve all got wierd morphs, just look at the classified, spider wana be, poka dot, blushing, mojaveish and so on. There all normals.

True, all of these descriptions are "puffery". I see no difference between this and the car dealership that constantly says "this is a great car...you've gotta see it to believe it...super-clean inside and out...etc."

Of course, I've had people in this forum swear up-and-down that my classic jungle was a "normal" and that a granite wasn't a morph, and blah blah blah...

First of all, "morph" is the wrong word for it. Second, we know very little about BP genetics and the various alleles that exist. Third, just because vpi, nerd, snakekeeper, etc. have yet to give a "morph" a name does not mean it is "normal". Finally, snakes are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If someone is willing to pay a premium for a "blushing" ball python (which are beautiful, imho), then it IS something special. If a "spider wanna-be" makes someone's day, then it is just as special. Conversely, you can have the most beautiful albino/axanthic/ghost/spider/pastel/whatever, and if nobody wants to buy it from you then it is worthless!

It's funny that the list of descriptions for "normals" has shrunken over the years. Last year, I bet black-backs would have been included in your list. Now that several people have established that there is a genetic blackback trait, it's a morph. So what do we know?

Tegan Nov 21, 2003 06:22 PM

I would say they are very pretty normals. (If you do prove them out as genetic you can call them whatever you want.)

I like the lightend look of them very nice.

Let us know how they do for you.

i still dont thik black blacks are genetic. one of my pet store normals looks EXACTLY like the ones on some breeders sites. Only difference is the price tag. not worth it in my opinion at all. just get a pastel and breed him to 4 females, pastel- morph. black blacks- regular normals.

chrisssanjose Nov 22, 2003 10:15 AM

Whether or not you 'like' blackbacks, or whether or not you
think they are 'worth it' is a separate question. Blackbacks
have been proven genetic. When breeding the right blackbacks
together, you will statistically produce a certain number
of baby blackbacks. Hence, genetic.

I have a very nice female blackback that laid 7 slugs and 1 good
egg last season. When the 1 egg hatched, she was a perfect
blackback!
