Map Turtle Problems

mhd1104 Nov 21, 2003 06:17 AM

Thank you those who responded to my previous post. My map turtle, which I purchased a month ago, does not bask. I have seen him do it twice. He has a shell diamter of approx. 4-5 inches. He seems to like standing next to the land area, but never goes up. It is easy for him to get to it, BTW. I saw something called 'forced basking'. Is this a reasonable option? Any responses would be great.

is he a new acquisition? have you had him less thna six months?
if so this is normal. Providing lots of cover (water plants and caves and possibly a backround or paint for the sides and back of the tank)will helphim adjust. He is likely to be shy of basking. It may also be that your basking spot is too warm. do yoy have a digital thermometer with aprobe...if not find 20 bucks if you can and get one. He won't be thrilled if its above 95. If the water is warmer than about 78 you may not see much basking either.
Is his shell in good condition. i woulnd't force bask him unles he is ill.
What kind of map is it?
