Yet another genetics question re: snow corns............

Raven01 Nov 21, 2003 08:59 AM

Okay, this little project I'm contemplating is really a couple of years off but I'd like some input anyway. I have an adult pair of snow corns (the male a pinkish snow corn, the female more the yellowish variety) and a yearling pair of really nice normals where the female has very little black and very bright reds and oranges. What I'm wanting to try is to breed the male snow (with his pinkish tones) to my hypoish normal female (when she's old enough) to see if I can get even more pinkish tones in the eventual snow offspring. Here's where I get a little confused. I know the first generation would look normal and should all be double-het for snow. When breeding that generation BACK to itself shouldn't I get at least some snows? And possibly ones that will develope the tones I'm looking for? And yes, I have Kathy Love's manual and plan to re-read through it over the weekend. lol I guess I'm just not sure because of the whole double-het thing and how that operates.

Thanks for any input!

I bred my snow female to a hypo-ish normal Okeetee last spring and got all normal babies het snow. So I used the Progeny Predictor to see what to do with the babies (I don't have the link to the software, but someone has it on here I'm sure. Mick Cornsnake Progeny Predictor, great program for things like this.)

Here's the results for breeding the babies to each other:

Male is, Het for Snow
Female is, Het for Snow

Offspring are predicted to be...
4/16, Het for Snow
2/16, Anerythristic, Het for Amel
2/16, Amelanistic, Het for Anery
2/16, Het for Anery
2/16, Het for Amel
1/16, Snow
1/16, Anerythristic
1/16, Amelanistic
1/16, Normal

But to get snows faster, breed one of the female babies back to her dad and you get more snows out of the mix:

Male is, Snow
Female is, Het for Snow

Offspring are predicted to be...
1/4, Snow
1/4, Anerythristic, Het for Amel
1/4, Amelanistic, Het for Anery
1/4, Het for Snow

(cool program and the babies are gorgeous I think, here one...

You may get snows with a lot of pink, but then again you might not. I'm not sure exactly what it is that makes some more pink than others. I guess it's just selective breeding. Also, in general, males seem to be more pink than females.

If on the other hand your male is hypo as well as being anery and amel (like mine is), then the reason for him being pink is the hypo genes.

I don't know if you are familiar with hypo snows, also called coral snows, but if you are trying to get more pink snows, you should try to get your hands on a hypo female to breed your male to, instead of your normal. That way you get triple hets for hypo/coral snows instead of double hets for regular snows.

Don Soderberg (South Mountain Reptiles) has some coral snow pictures in his photo gallery on his website. You might want to check them out.

Here's a pic of my hypo/coral snow:

I've not seen the corals before...I only recently started dabbling in the corns. I basically just wanted to play around a little with the genetic pool I have. As I mentioned in my reply to IcedGoddess, I have a related pair of normals and the pair of snows of which relativity is in question. I thought some outbreeding would be a good thing, then got to wondering how the colors in my hypoish female might react when combined with the male snow and then filtered down to snows again from the hets. Starting with double hets probably isn't the best way to dabble in genetics, but it's what I have currently. Since I have 24 snakes now and hope to have two litters of boas next year from my two currently breeding pairs, I'm not sure how my other half would feel about me purchasing yet more corns. He's been a patient man so far but I have snakes everywhere in our house. lol Thanks for the advise, however, as I might yet find myself purchasing yet more corns in the future.

Thanks! I'll print this out to keep on hand. Basically I just want to experiment a bit with the corns I have. My normals are siblings but I don't know if the snows are related or not. I got them from a friend who received them from someone she knew, who in turn had gotten them from someone else....you get the picture. I was looking for a way to outbreed for a little more genetic diversity but would like to see what comes of it when bred back to itself - either the siblings to each other, or your idea of back to the original male snow. Then I got to thinking about the lovely pinkish tones my male snow has and wondered how it would blend with the brightness of my female normal once she's of age. It just kinda went downhill from there.

BTW, beautiful baby! I love the normal color ranges (which is why I got the pair of normals) but I'm also facinated with the whole color/pattern genetics interplay. If nothing else, I'll have a housefull of lovely baby corns! :D
