Those darn crickets

bmulcahy Nov 21, 2003 11:02 AM

I am having all kinds of problems with those crickets - they hide everywhere and I am afraid they will hurt my beardies at night. I just cleaned my driftwood today and found 6 crickets living in the wood and I stopped putting crickets in the living tank two days ago. How does everyone feed their beardies? Have problems with one bearded eating in a feeding tank (see post from yesterday)- any suggestions would be deeply appreciated! Thanks!!!

If you add veggies at night, the crickets will munch on the veggies instead of your dragon.

I built a simple small wooden box with no top. Twice a day I take my beardie out and put crickets in the box with him. Since the crickets are the only thing in the box, they cannot hide, he finds them quickly, and feeding goes much more smoothly. It also helps me to know that he is actually eating what I am fedding him.

I have a twenty gallon tank that I started to do that in with my beardies. However, one of them freaks out and will not eat at all. All she tries to do is climb up the glass walls. This is my major problem. Thanks for any advice.

it coulb be that your beardie is seeing its reflection. the solution to that would be to put construction paper, or even computer paper up inside the tank. it usually slides right into the black rim on top. you need to make sure it is on the inside though, because otherwise your beardie will still see its reflection. hope that helps.

The paper worked - Thanks! I put carpet on the glass floor and paper on the sides and she ate like a pig. Hopefully that is the solution. Thanks again1

Hey, I'm glad that I could help. I came up with that idea when my brother's bearded dragon(i take care of it, lol) kept aggrivating my iguana because one side of his tank faced the iguana. I put paper on the outside but then he rammed the glass with his head. I was like, ok I need to change that, so I put it on the inside and all three of us have been happy ever since. Glad I could help.

I used to hand feed my dragon his crickets, this way they don't escape and hide in the large piece of driftwood I have in his cage. But now I switched completely over to silkworms and these are much better to feed my dragon. I just drop a few near the salad bowl and leave. If she doesn't eat them all, it's no big deal...I gather up any left over silkworms and put them back in the container with the others. So much easier than crickets or other crawling insects.

We have a big terra cotta bowl that we feed in. We put the lettuce, wet pellets and crickets in it so he know where to eat from. When the crickets were little, they didn't get out. Now he eats the big ones so fast they don't have a chance to get out.

Has anyone tried that new cricket feeder out? You put in dust, then crickets, cover then unplug a small hole so the crickets come out one at a time, already dusted.
