Hyper Hondurans not Hypo Hondurans!!

dasnakeguy Nov 21, 2003 12:33 PM

I just got my first pair of hypo hondurans and man are they spastic!!! Everyone says they calm down as adults but how much? Will then at least be handleable? And does this mean only with regular handling?

but they will probably never be as calm as an adult cornsnake, for example. Mine did best if I handled them for about 5 minutes each day when they were babies (you can increase these minutes and decrease the number of days held as they get older) , except during shedding or the 2 days after eating. I also would cup babies in the palm of my hand with the other hand loosely cupped over that. Mine felt more secure that way. My adult gets jumpy if I don't handle him twice a week now.

They calm down just fine. My adults are as calm as any corn snake, and I don't handle them that much. The best time to handle them for me is after they shed, when they are quite happy and want to celebrate crawling out of that old skin. Of course, as hatchlings they are spastic, and they will musk you when you handle them. However, not all hatchlings are created equal, as I've had some that don't launch themselves or musk. I house mine in sweater box racks, in which they feel quite secure. I've found that ground coconut shell works great as a substrate for them. They are fossorial if given the chance and love to tunnel through the damp substrate. I like to keep it somewhat damp for them in spring and summer. Don't worry. They will calm down a lot. Guaranteed!
