WHY WOULD YOU EVEN THINK OF FEEDING A MONITOR THAT JUNK? TRY MICE, CRICKETS, ROACHES, RATS, OR GROUND TURKEY. AND DONT FORGET A DUSTING OF TASTY MINERALL.

andrew owen Nov 21, 2003 02:03 PM

i almost forgot what monitors really eat man! woops!

In my experience, I have experimented with many food sources for my komodoensis, and I've found that they seem to relish wonton soup and sauerbraaten, and my giganteous trio does great on a pure diet of timothy hay and alfalfa pellets.. wierd, eh??

It was supposed to be a pic of my piebald merten's water monitor(Varanus mertensi). Sorry for any confusion, but just to set the record straight, that was not a pic of a mertens water monitor. Once again, my apologies...

The shift key is your friend.

Its goldfish that they love! Everyone who knows anything feeds their monitors goldfish. Make sure its the chedder flavor though, that way they get the calcium that they need. Really.

you know, i never would be shocked if someone actually did what we are joking about. i mean, people feed sausage to their monitors, why wouldn't they feed pizza or dried fruit(fruit in general always drives me up the wall, and there are some who advocate it on here). i don't know, my monitors clutch regularly and are healthy on basic stuff like mice, rats and crickets, hmmmmmmm.

Have you tried feeding fruits, and found them to be a negative factor? Compared that to females not fed fruits? Do you have any actual experience with what you are slagging?

Something tells me you haven't, and you are just theorizing..

Please don't forget, there are people like D.Turner, who DO feed alternative foods, and hey, his monitors grow well and multiclutch just fine, too!! Just like you!! wow.
Why not ask, how can monitors eat fruits, and still do just fine?

I am not out to attack you, (and welcome back) but trying to make a point. Its too easy to feel like you have it all figured out about monitors. I thought you said you were still learning? If you aren't just paying lip service to that, you would have an open mind.
My lizards won't eat bananas. Guess how I know?
D.

andrew owen Nov 21, 2003 04:15 PM

see this is the problem d,

my monitors don't eat bananas either, know how i know? because i don't let them.

we keep monitors in captivity and we are in control of them, with that being said, why would we feed fruits? does it make them healthier? or are we just trying to be cool by doing it?

until somebody does some heavy research on the benefits of feeding fruits (other than gray's) to monitors, i will continue doing what i have.

it works, and thats one thing i actually do know,

why care so much if others try to give there monitors fruit, hey as you said were in charge and if the monitors decide to eat the fruit then they must be eating it for a reason surely? It makes no odds to my life or yours if goon or anyone else for that matter feed fruit or goldfish or beef currys, people will try different things just to see what happens and some go with "what works for them"but how can we progress if we dont try eh?Trial and error is what we learn from and im confident im well and truely still learning so i just do what i can to help my monitor get by,maybe if i get past that stage i will try something outwith the norm and maybe ill learn something that no-one has before, highly unlikely but hey you get the picturestay cool man and stop fretting about what others do

"just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it wouldn't for others"

here's the deal jason, goon, others.....

we have hard evidence that says that monitors do well on a proven diet (mice, insects)

people have tried feeding fruits to no (or very little) benefit.

i think i will stick with what WORKS,

cheers, andrew

do what works,i asked why you had a problem with others not doing what works,i know its been proven that mice/crickets is a good staple diet and i myself use these 2 only but some people use other stuff aswell to varying degrees, from roaches to the extremes of fruit,i was just pointing out some people like to experiment and hasnt goon hatched some monitor eggs already?fruit cant be all that bad, maybe its no good either who cares
chill dude,i dont know jacksh!t about whats right and whats wrong but you gotta start somewhere eh?

Please define 'we'?

How many generations and years have you been breeding monitors? How many different diets have you, personally, tried? Why jump on people who want to try stuff for themselves, just because you don't?

I don't feed my monitors bananas, because I know they won't eat them. What do you know?
fellow curmudgeon, =)

creeps Nov 22, 2003 03:57 AM

Monitors do not need a varied diet.

However, it isn't going to hurt them, and get this...

It can be FUN to watch a Kimberly eat a tomato.

creeps Nov 21, 2003 05:55 PM

Perhaps people do such things for the sake of fun?

That is why we do this, right? For fun.

Go have some.

rsg Nov 21, 2003 09:44 PM

I do it in order to take money for animals that haven't hatched yet, to claim I bred many more species than I have proof of, and to make others feel inferior.
Oh yeah, and for the money!!!

Muhahahahahahah!

Hope all is well Creepy.
