whoever told you that is completely wrong.

just heat or night lighting if you wish from them.

who ever your getting your info from you should just steer clear from,red-black bulb are for heating and viewing night time animals. Here are a few pointers incase you didnt know

1.leopard geckos DO NOT require a uva or uvb lighting.

2.sand is a BIG NO NO its cause more trouble than whats its worth, like impacting which could lead to death.

3.paper towels and slate make a great tank bottom, while slate is nicer its also harder to clean vs. paper towels which you just replace old with new and your done.

4.temps are a huge factor in reptiles, more reptiles die from improper temps and than not being fed right.leo need day temps of 86-90f with a night time drop to about 75. remember too hot can give any animal heat stroke.

5.feeding leo's is perhaps one of the most easiest reptiles to feed next to plant matter reptiles, mealworms can make 100% of the gecko's feed, some use crickets but they can carry parasites which could pass to the leo.superworms are great too and leo's love them cause they move more than mealworms are more filling.

6.tank size is another big thing, make sure its not too big,a leo can live in a 10G just fine through adult hood never needing a bigger tank however some people prefer 20's for a bigger floor area but 10's work great for juvi's and babies and are much easier to heat vs. a bigger thank.

7.remember to the more stuff you have in your tank the more time it take to clean, once a month all the furniture need to be cleaned with 5% bleach with a real good rinse after wood and fully dried out.

hope this helps....
