Pumilio's

Shlacon Nov 21, 2003 04:00 PM

I am looking into getting some pumilios. But an unsure as to which morph to try and get. Really I am unsure of all the morphs available. Do the morphs breed true? I mean if you breed to Bastimentos would all the offspring be Bastimentos or can you get diffrent color morphs? Well any comments, ideas, and suggests are always welcome! Also if you have any pictures of pumilios I'd love to see them!!
Thanks
Jamie

My first question is have you ever successfully kept dart frogs? To the begginer there tiny size and food requirements can be challenging, even with one of the larger tincs, let alone a pumilio that will never grow larger than an inch, some never growing larger than a 1/2 an inch. And they are quite expensive with the cheaper bastimentos form going for 125 dollars and they usually have a three month waiting list. My suggestion is start with a larger cheaper frog, like leucomelas or auratus. And read all you can about dartfrogs. Kyle1745 has a good links page, one of the best pages is probably www.doylesdartden.com . Make sure to start fruit fly cultures long before you get any frogs so you can get the hang of it. What I did was start of with leucomelas, then I got some auratus, and then I finally got my thumbnails, the imitators and the vents. Even with the previous experience with larger frogs I was still a little apprehensive about getting small frogs, but the previous experience helped me alot. I got the hang of culturing fruitflies, so I always had a steady flow of fruitflies. Also read all the post in the arrow frog forum, they have alot of good posts. But theses frogs are addicting, as many other people will probably say. I started a year ago and look at my list of frogs, and by the ned of christmas there will be another 10 or so.

I have kept D. Azureus and D. Auratus. I have tons of fruit flys as well as rice flour bettles and sprintails. I know thunbnails aren't for a beginner, but you have to make the move forward sometime! I really liked the color of the pumilios but to be honest I haven't really looked into vents or imitators, I do really like D. fantasticus though. Would one of these frogs be a better starting point for thumb nails??

It's good you've had darts before, and you know what you're doing. I started with Imitators and Vents, I think you would be better off starting off with vents, they are usually available without a waiting list and they are usually only $45, instead of 70 for imitators, 125 for fantasticus, or 125 and up for pumilio. I was very happy with my imitators and vents, they have there own little personalities. Pumilio.com, and tincs.com, usually have some. I am not sure is saurian.net has some because he doesnt have any posted on his website, but he may have some. I have my thumbnails set up in vertical 10's with a fold down glass door (1/4" thick), using acrylic parts from peace of the tropic. They really enjoy the smaller bromeliads like fireballs, and chiquita lindas. I have seen that they stay away from the larger bromeliads. And the imitators and vents usually morph out big enough to eat melangosters.

i would also suggest you get vents or imitators, both are very nice frogs. i like the imitators call a little better, so if you are interested in that i would lean to the imitators. but both are really cool, and a lot cheaper then pumilio.

Hi,
Not saying I jumped the gun too much but I got my first dartfrogs,Costa Rican auratus,in June of 2002 and got my imitators in October 2002.If you have done your research they aren't,IMO, any different then most other dartfrogs.Mine are doing great.I'd look into imis or vents, imis if your a patient person, vents if your not,LOL

No one answered your question regarding morphs breeding true to color and type. They do with minor variations. Here is a photo of one of my Pumilio Bastimentos froglets.
