information needed for buying a columbian

tribbielvr Nov 21, 2003 04:07 PM

I have about given up on finding an adult female columbian to buy so I have some questions about babies.

What can I expect in color changes in a baby? I want something with very little flecking, I would like either a reduced saddle OR a circleback. My question is, as babies or juveniles do they tend to get more, less, or stay the same as they get older when it comes to flecking?

Also, my male has a very red tail. Is there a way to tell on a baby if the tail is going to stay red or if it is going to get dark?

Thanks!
Nina

'normal' colombians tails will pretty much always go dark.. they are rarely even RED as babies. if you want a nice BCI with low speckling check out jeffe ronnes pastels. they are essentially normals, though theyve been through several generations of selective breeding for color and less flecking. gus at rio bravo, dan at dm exotics, and a few others have stellar, clean 'normal' colombian babies as well.

as to what color changes, his line in particular colors up nicely from the older animals ive seen. with just a 'random' normal, its a gmble, you could get more color. generally, all boas darken a bit with age, no matter what. speckles are pretty much, wysiwyg (what you see is what you get). unless something crazy is going on, your boa will not produce more black scales than it started with.

hope this helps

I guess I need to get some better pictures of my male and post them. I posted some about a week ago, but they were very dark and you could not tell alot about him.

He is three years old and about 6 feet long, however his tail is still VERY red. He has a very light base color, very little flecking and somewhat of a circleback pattern although this tail pretty much just one long stripe of red.

Sounds a little like a BCC, maybe peruvian. I'd like to see some pics!

Man, that is one nice BCI! You're right, it does have a very red tail! And that stripe! Very clean Boa. Good find.

Thanks for taking the time to go back and look. I am going to try to get some better pictures with better lighting this evening.

We are really happy with him and hopefully can find him a nice mate.
