Alternative reasons for weasing????

TomChambers Nov 21, 2003 04:14 PM

This morning I almost had a heart attack when I went to reintroduce one of my males. He was exhibiting a constant wheezing, but there was no other sign of RI that I could discern. I immediately called the vet, and have an appointment tomorrow. I'm just baffled how he could have an RI (if he does) he has a constant 90 hotspot, 80-83 cool side days 73-76 cool side nights (as do all my snakes).
I just got home and checked him, now he has no wheeze???
Begining of RI???
Thanks for any replies

also he hasn't shed in about three weeks so I doubt nasal blockage

Was he hissing? I have one big nasty tempered girl that makes a wheezing sound when ever I mess with her. Doesn't sound like a "Hissssssssss" It sounds like a "Whhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeezzzzzeee" As soon as I stop messing with her, she stops wheezing. Could your male just have been in a foul temper?

No, he is a real mellow dude. Although, I do have a few females that start hissing as soon as the drawer opens, (seems like they all do this time of year) but he has an awesome temperament. It was definitely a wheeze, a quiet high pitch whistle sound.
I’ll see what the vet says tomorrow.
Thanks for the suggestion.

first and formost keep the trip to the vet. secondly i have a big female that if the temp gets more than 90 degrees for any amount of time she whistles and even postures , holding her head striaght up usually in the corner of of her cage and sometimes right to the top. she also whistles if she gets streessed which is just about anytime i handle her. when she first started this i was afraid of a ri too took her right to the vet and they did a lung wash and found nothing he did have me start her on a 5 shot antibiotic before the result came back from the lung wash . and after the negetaive results and two weeks of shots she was still whistling so we tried lowering the temp and lo and behold she stop posturing and whistling except of course if i handle her to much. anyways thats my experience good luck

Thanks Steve, that’s a very interesting story about the temps.
I'll take that under consideration if the vet doesn't find anything.
My snake room is thermostatically controlled, and companioned with uth, also the temps have been on the same cycle since the end of Sept (winter cooling). Not to mention I’m borderline psychotic with my double checking temps with the Raytek gun. It was pretty hot this summer, so if this is a temperature induced condition, I would speculate it would be from cooler, rather than hot temperature peaks
Thanks again
