Going home for Thanksgiving...

chikimonke Nov 21, 2003 06:04 PM

And I'm bringing Jak with me since I don't have anyone to take care of him while I'm gone. Is this going to be too stressful for him, should I work something else out? I'll be going home tuesday night and coming back sometime sunday. Also, if it's fine to bring him home, what should I keep him in to do so? I want to make it as stress free as possible.

Also, I noticed the posts earlier about leaving the UTH on 24/7 and other related topics. As best as I can tell, Jak spends a good 90% of his time in the humid hide, which is on the hot side. Is that something I should be concerned with, however, I don't know if he's moving around at night, or just staying in the hide. He'll usually go to the cool hide for an hour or so around 6 or 7pm almost every night. Any help is much appreciated.

tuesday to sunday is too long for him to stay by himself you are right. But it might be a better idea if you can have soem oen coem over every other day to feed him and make sure his water and humid hide is good. The trip would be stressful to him and getting someone to come and care for him every other day would be best. OR you can give him a dish of mealies, quite a few of them maybe 15-20 and just get someone to come 2 times for him, i have done both with all my lizards and no problems, just make sure he has a water bowl that will not tip filled up, humid hide all moist and alot of mealies. If you take the leaving him hoem option i would definatly say you would need to have someone come a few times. Feel free to Email me! Fruitionx@aol.com
Good luck and have a safe/Happy thanksgiving!!!

If I can't find somebody though, will it be really bad to bring him home? It's a 45 minute drive, so I could potentially come down myself everyother day, but that's not exactlly convinient nor helpful for my studying. I have a take home test in one of my electronics classes due the monday after break so I'll be spending a lot of time doing that.

It should be perfectly fine to leave him where he is while you are gone. As Lauren said.. just leave a dish filled with about 20 mealies for him and possibly multiple water dishes if your your dish evaporates too quickly. I wouldn't worry about the humid hide too much, as long as he has shed fairly recently. Don't worry about him too much, he looks healthy and if he runs out of food that won't be too much of an issue. Just make sure he as plenty of water! Have fun on your trip!

I'm sure a leo could live for weeks with no food. Water might be more of an issue, but even still, they store fat and water so a week won't do it any harm. It will just be super hungy when you get back
Maybe a bag full of thanksgiving crickets would make it happy after a vacation lol

good luck!

no it wont be terrible, 45 minutes isnt bad, just put him in a small cozy container/box and take his setup as is and put it together at your house. He will be much happier if his home stays as is.
Good luck and have a great thanksgiving!

Being that close i would probally just make the drive every couple days. You could get up extra early on that day or stay up a little later that night and sacrafice the sleep if it worries you.
If you wanted to take him you could invest in a critter keeper of some sort that he can travel in and live in while your home.
Just a thought.

bring him home
that short of a trip isnt as stressfull as u think
45 min is about how long it is to my vet when i do check ups and my gexs dont stress over that. just get a styrofoambox, a kritterskkeper and a hot waterbottle. fill the hot water botte with 90 F water put it on a side of the styrofoambox but not under the kritterkeeper. with that youll have a nice transportbox, just stash his normal cage in the back

Well, 5 days really isnt alot at all if you have a nice, healthy adult with a fat tail. I've left my leos for a whole week a couple of times before and I just made sure they had an extra dish of water and i fed them good the day i left and the day i came back. they were fine. But if your gecko is still young, i'm not sure what you could do. but i hope someone else can help! I would think it would be better just to leave it with a nice big dish of mealworms and extra water instead of causing stress from taking him with you. But thats just me, maybe someone else has another alternative for you.

its best if he stays home as a whole new inviorment will stress him, take 2-3 shallow dishes, the top to the mealworm container works great for holding them if money is an isssue and fill eaqch with 10-15 mealies and if possible get a repti-reserve water bowl,it hold about 2 pints of water and will easily last a week,if his heat is maintained by a bulb get a timer set for 12hrs,other than that he really shold be fine, ive left reptiles who eat vegtable matter a few days and they where fine, most reptiles can go a month or more without food and not be too effected by it. dont worry about food, water is your concern really....good luck whatever route you choose.

I say take him home w/ you. Forty five minutes isn't that long & you can set him up in his regular house when you get there. It'll be easiest for you & fine for him.
