brown snake..?

ginevive Jun 01, 2003 06:55 AM

Do brown snakes have a red/pinkish underbelly? I found two brown/tan colored snakes under some old roofing shingles in western NY state, each snake was about a foot long, with pinkish bellies. None of the pics I found online showed the snakes' stomachs, that's why I ask.

The belly of the brown snake can vary from yellow to tan to pinkish. A similar snake, the red-bellied snake..same genus, Storeria, has a much redder belly. I hope this helps.

It probably is a red bellied snake. They look very similar to their relative, they brown snake. Only they have red or orange bellies, and a light spot on both sides of their neck, I've found them to be common in Chenango county N.Y.

Yes some brown snakes have pinkish bellies, although they are usually cream I have seen them with a yellowish tint also.
