hey its me turtleguy11688 ive posted here a few time long time ago.seen there aint much going on here so i will start posting here again.

when i was posting around like last jan or so i had some htacling ally's.had 4 one was a hypo but all excpet 2 didnt make it.im pretty sure its becuase of are water.but now i boil it or sit it out for a long time before putting them in it.
but the 2 have grown pretty good. i had them kept warm for like 8 months or so . and when i started getting there water warm they were like an 1 3/4 and other about same maybe alittle smaller. but now about a year since ive had them i havent measured in a while but there about 4-6 inches (shell) and weight pretty good. but i havent had heat on them in about a month or so and they dont eat near as much i am going to put heat back on them soon. i will post there measurements later.
.ive thought about getting a couple more hatchling but gonna hold off for a while.
the only food my allys get is turtle stick reptomin and some other turtle pellets. id like to get some feeder fish in there but havent yet. whats the cheapest feeder that i can buy at like fish store and that breed fast. and are pretty easy to keep alive.
and ive also thought about feeding pinkies now and then but always forget.

i keep them in a rubbermaid container not sure of size but like size of 20 gal tank or so. and ive been having alot of trouble with filters going out. had 2 go out in like 8 months witch i guess isnt to bad. but walmart let me return them for new ones.

i think why they are growing good is heated water, alot of food. and i bet since i started running heater ive only held them 6 times or so to clean cage.im pretty sure that helped keep them calm and more relaxed.

well just thought i would let yall know about my allys and stuff.

bye
thanks
jess

Hey. Sorry to hear about the two allys. I would reccomend using feeder guppies, I have my own breeding colony of them and they produce upward of 400 babies a year. they are the common type not the fancy. They do quite well in a 30 gallon tank. good luck

turtleguy2 Nov 22, 2003 02:37 PM

ok cool i will go with guppies if i can.
i will probably by like 8 females and 2 males or should i buy more? how long should it take before they breed and make guppies?
thanks
jess

Mine usually breed 7-8 times every month and my females usually have 5-10 babies. I started off with two dozen because they were like $5.00 a dozen. But starting small should'nt be any trouble.

turtleguy2 Nov 22, 2003 08:33 PM

cool,i will probably get a dozen depending on price but i know they will be pretty exspensive for guppies.since im in west tx no water anywhere they think they gotta charge alot for guppies its stupid i think.

but the only thing holding me back from getting them is a filter and stuff.

thanks

Guppies need to be kept fairly warm, but a filter isn't necessary. You can ask the pet shop people to give you a p.g. female, and that will get you nicely started!

turtleguy2 Nov 23, 2003 02:50 AM

yea i was thinking about getting at least 1 pregnant female.

i did alot of reading on guppies and they need 30-60 % water changes every 3 days or so.so i guess a filter wouldnt really be needed since most of the dirty water would be changed.

one thing on kingsnake livebearing fish forum i didnt see was how big they get. will they be a good size for the size of my ally's. and if i can get guppies to keep form dieing i want something else in there to maybe some snails.i think most fish places will pretty much give u snails since they come in plants and stuff and they dont want them.are snails good for ally's?

tomorrow i will probably go buy a dozen or so guppies and maybe some snails..
what about brine shrimp? can they live with guppies or will they try to eat the fry? i am going to have to get some fake plants or some water plants for future fry's.

if there is any other kind of cheap feeder fish let me know.

thanks

I also use ghost shrimp they do not breed as fast, but they cause a immediate response on all my baby turtles. they are 29 cents at petsmart, I also breed many types of fish, snails, shrimps, crayfish, and crabs for my turtles. I can probably get some caresheets if your interested.

turtleguy2 Nov 23, 2003 05:34 PM

i would appreciate that. send me all u got . that would be cool i never thought to feed turtles crabs.lol..

thanks
jess

My turtles actually got hooked on crabs by accident, one of them got out and crawled into the turtle tank and the turtles ate it immediatley, since then I incorporrated crabs into their diet. I say go for ghost shrimps first, my common snapper inhales them. Anyway here are some websites that might shed light on the situation
(http://www.shrimpcrabsandcrayfish.co.uk/) this is for shrimp, crabs, crayfish etc.

And for guppies and other feeder fish (http://www.aqualink.com/fresh/z1-guppy.html) (http://www.klsnet.com/feeder.html).

These are the only sites that helped me. But with a varied diet like this I'm sure your allys will be happy.

It Feels good to get this forum started again

turtleguy2 Nov 23, 2003 09:15 PM

ok i will get guppies and shrimp before i get crabs and stuff.
oh and do you keep the shrimp with your guppies?

cool thanks for the web sites.

yea i should of never stoped posting.

thanks
jess

Keeping guppies and shrimp together shouldnt be a problem. sorry for not responding sooner

turtleguy2 Nov 24, 2003 08:51 PM

cool.

i got every thing i need today(i think) .got chlorine stuff.ph level stuff.some test strips (wich were 10 BUCKS).and clear water stuff and something else i cant remember. and i went ahead and bought alittle filter for 10 bucks not to bad.and had to get another filter for ally's(there went out last week).and i bought some fish food and some food for the fry when there born. and a few other little things.and it came to 63 bucks. a little bit more than i thought it would be.

i got the tank setup put chlorine ,chlormine or what ever it is called and heavy metal remover in it..and the ph level up stuff.what level is ok for guppies it said that livebearing fish need higher ph levels. thats cool... but it says to gradually get the ph level up.will they be ok if i put fish in tomorrow??and i put a heater in there just incase it was to get cold.

now only thing left is getting an air pump i have 2 but both just dont wanna push air out.so i gotta buy another.
and i will tyr and get some guppies, shrimp, and maybe some snails tomorrow. and i need to get some plant fake or alive for a hideout.

most fish places around here only got fancy guppies.i dont want fancy just normal kind, but if they dont got any i can always just get shrimp and snails and get guppies when they come in.

thanks

Mollies breed easily to they are my female softshells favorite treat. hope your fish have many babies, your snappers will like something new.

turtleguy2 Nov 25, 2003 08:33 PM

yea i hope they do. everything seems to be doing great. they ate first 5 mins they were in there. i have 2 diff kinds of snails. the normal looking kind and the on shaped like a cone. there all small. but should grow pretty quick i hope.as soon as i put them in there 1 climb up the wall and out of the water, maybe just exploring or something..

ghost shrimp are only 10 for a buck(gonna get some later). the molly's were 12 for a buck,i think i got platties and like a few mollies.

ok im gonna go check on everything ,later

thanks
