The many generations of the leopard gecko forum...

iluvblackfrancis Nov 22, 2003 01:45 AM

Wow, when I started posting on this forum, about 95% of the people on it now weren't here. About the same time I started, back when it was the old forum, there was a post kind of like this, on how all the original members were gone. That's what it's starting to feel like for me. I have a bit of a theory why; when the beginners who come here for help start getting the hang of it, they become the ones giving the help. Eventually they start getting bored of the same questions over and over, and stop coming. It's a bit of a sad thing, but also a good thing too. Sad in that, the forum never really stays stable, like most forums, but good in that it's forever evolving, and staying educational for newcomers. I guess this is good bye for me, and hello for the new generation.

Well sit right down my wicked son
And let me tell you a story
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am with my hand

He took his sister from his head
And then painted her on the sheets
And then rolled her up in grass and trees
And they kissed 'till they were dead

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am, with my hand

Well sit right down my evil son
And let me tell you a story
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am, with my hand

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am, with my hand

I think it's like that with any community on the Internet. Well, even just the Internet in general has changed. I mean, does anybody still remember when Yahoo was just a search engine?

So you're leaving?

Yep and I remember when Geocities was the coolest site to make a home page. I mean, Wow! They went from 2 to 3 megs of space! Who could possibly use all that? And you could go outside your "house" and check out pages all along the "block". Seriously, that was one of my favorite ways to websurf. I was so sad to see it change when Yahoo! bought them out.

Oh, yeah! I do remember when GeoCities went from 2 megs to 3. Probably what I miss most is LPage's guestbooks.

I've been posting since long before there even was a leo forum. Before there was kingsnake.ca, etc.

And I still lurk, and post once in a while. No reason to leave.

I have been on this forum for years. When KS changed to the login system, I just changed the name which I post under.

I see what you mean. I have been posting for about a year now (on & off due to my busy schedule) and though I don't post much on the beardie or leo forums, the water dragon and iguana forums have been pretty stable; there are a bunch of us "regulars" who talk a lot & know each other fairly well (at least well enough for a reptile forum). I guess that since they are smaller forums & the type of lizard is not as popular as the beardies or leos, that might be why? I don't think the changing seasons of generations of forum members are a bad thing though...

I used to post on this forum all the time 2-4 years ago, but I rarely do anymore. I read it, but only respond if it's an important subject that I think I can add to.

I think the reasons I quit posting have to do with 1.)the same old questions keep getting posted by people who do not use the search tool on this forum to get their questions answered, 2.) I was getting frusrated with people asking for advise and not taking it or using it, and 3.)There were too many egos involved and flame wars that I did not feel were in the best interest of the real reason for this forum... which is to exchange information and ideas for the creatures we all love. Leos!

1) Get tired of the same questions being asked repeatedly
2) Get tired of advice not being taken
3) Get tired of seeing the same people that wouldn't take advice, now answering questions
4) Realising that all of the above people will attempt to breed their animals regardless of their level of [mis]information

are pretty much right on track of why. also, (and i am by no means a big breeder or been doing with for eons)it seems like the experienced leopeople like, marcia, kelli, jodi ,chris, bill and all the other "old school" guys and gals , whom have been doing this for many many years, get their experienced answeres to questions, challanged by newbie wanna be's. I mean who would want to come on here, with 10-20 years of experience of keeping and breeding geckos and answer questions just to be challanged by someone whom has only been doing with for a year. alot of the people who used to be on here had years of experience, and for it just to be thrown back into their face... i really dont blame them. it's a shame because i for one would love to have some discussions with them.

i think so many people base all their info on the leopard gecko manual, and its a good BASIC book but their is soooooo much more info out there and more accurate info at that. alot of the people "newbies" that come here, do so with out any research of the animal they are caring for. why do you think so many of the same questions are asked on basic husbandry????? i have been keeping reptile for more than 6 years and geckos for about 2 and i for one dont know everything, infact i learn something new everyday but i try to learn as much as i can not only about what i keep but all reptiles in general and i go to the experienced breeders and keepers to answers or they direct me to the books i need to read to obtain the info i am looking for.
i bet more than half of the poeple here or the newbies dont know the scientific name to there animal...... does it matter? not really because everyone knows what a leopard gecko is but it helps expand your knowledge of them.

well im done with my rantings

I never thought about that, but It definately makes sense. Its pretty sad that people get all I know everything after a year of having a gecko. People should be respectful to people with alot more experience them. When I first came on, I just read posts for a while, then starting posting questions. By then I knew who were the more experienced keepers so I took there word for it on alot of things. Thats the way it should be i think, not like I think your wrong because a book says so, or my friend told me different.

Hey, you left me out and I'm at still at least a forum sponsor, LOL!
The main reason I stay away from the forum is just what you said. Those sand threads really tore me. I just got tired of beating a dead horse and let people believe what they want to believe. "Better safe than sorry" can be taken to such rediculous extreme. Really, are we really safe even walking out the front door in the morning? As a result, almost all the care sheets I ever see advise against it. I can tell right away which ones either are themselves or worse, take the word of newbies.

There are a lot of us that post fairly regularly then don't post for awhile. I've been reading this forum since fall of 1998, and like most people lost my login name with the new system. I think many people read the forum for many months or even years before posting.

I do hope you're taking a break rather than saying a final good-bye! Would be a shame to lose you.

I was only on here for A few months, then gone for a couple and now already theres so many people are gone and so many new people are here. I remember when I first came to the forum I didnt know very much about leos except warmside/coolside mealworms, lol. I bet I've learned 90% of the stuff i know now from the forum, its great for begginers. I can see how people get so bored with the same questions over and over, but I see it as a good thing, more people are getting into leos. When i start getting bored, I take a break from the forum and come back in a months or so. I also think people should remember that when your answering a question, you might just be improving the life of a leo, and maybe that will keep you from skipping a simple or over repeated question.
My opinion on the repeated questions thing is that when people first some on, they dont realize what they're doing. They want an answer from the experts on the forum, sorting through threads can be confusing when some people are saying yes and some are saying no. They want to interact with the forum, and theres nothing wrong with that.
If you dont feel like typing up everything you need to know about leos, you can give them good sites, books, ect.
